enjoying the wonderful aroma of a pork chop casserole in the oven.....thinly sliced potatoes, topped by browned pork chops, then topped by cream of mushroom soup mixed w/milk.

I used to hate slicing potatoes.....until I got my pampered chef mandoline.......now I look for excuses!

The good news is that I'm jumping in right at the fun part, the system just went live and I'm supposed to help users who suddenly have no idea how to do things they didn't even have to think about before. It's a very rewarding time, maybe my favorite, because people are usually very grateful when you help them out

The bad news is that we go by car tomorrow morning, because there is a train strike (in Belgium and not France for a change). I may even have to drive

We are going to 's-Hertogenbosch, in the Netherlands. I am not kidding, this is really the name of the city. Who would have thought that a name can start with an apostrophe - or is it a quote?

I need to start packing...
hey ! i have been to 's-Hertogenbosch !! i can't remember whether we stopped there or not, it was on the day we took the driving tour of... the entire country ! (it's really not a very big country. ) it's also called "den bosch" if i remember correctly. but i agree with you ; who starts a name of a city with "apostrophe s" ?? maybe it's a backwards english possessive form ? i've wondered about that ever since.

so how was the drive ?

/me tries to imagine how dg can possibly do *anything* to potatoes with a mandolin. doesn't it ruin the acoustics ? it can't be good for the strings either ! not to mention the varnish ! and as my violin-maker ex-neighbor explained to me, the varnish is key in the construction of a fine stringed instrument !

Last edited by zelda_pinwheel; 11-05-2009 at 03:08 PM. Reason: strings on a mandolin, sting like a bee.

Hey, I've never heard of it, so I thought that might really be the name! Now I'll have to go google for a picture of a mandoline!

I mean ... you almost COULD push potatoes through the strings of a mandolin, and get nice slices. Maybe!

Or you could pick the mandolin up by the handle and whack those potatoes with the big end. You'd get nicely (?) smashed potatoes.

'sigh. This.

http://www.pamperedchef.com/our_prod...ategoryCode=CE

It kinda looks lightweight, but isn't, and is worth every cent I paid for it.

I love the little holder for the blades, (even one for shredding cheese) and no worries about cutting my fingers....it won't work with out using the guard........

I am very good at cutting my fingers with a knife.....

Yes....$60 was a lot to pay for it. But I've used cheaper ones, and wasn't happy with the results.

I've got a kitchen full of useless appliances and gadgets that I"ve bought and hated......but this isn't one of them!!

yep, i understand you. my first vacuum cleaner taught me that sometimes the "cheap" option ends up more expensive, in the long run. and a good knife is worth a lot to a cook. so i'm sure it's worth it. i just wish it were cheaper, since i would actually like to buy one, and that's quite a lot to shell out. although... if i buy it in dollars... it will be much cheaper... hm. maybe i can afford one after all.

A cook's mandoline is wonderful for preparing pommes boulangère or dauphinoise quickly. I wouldn't be without mine, and use it more often than a food processor.
