Not according to the Kindle Chronicles podcast. The "podcaster" (is that term?) said that both the cover and the Oasis had USB ports for charging. The manual seems to say the same ... I guess ...

USB/power port: You can use the supplied USB cable to connect your Kindle to a computer for charging the battery located in your Kindle and in the charging cover.

I would like to see a picture of the USB port in the cover to confirm this, however.

WRONG You Cant charge the Case without the Ereader Yes it takes Hours to charge them

There is No usb port for charging. Clearly states Case Must be On the Reader for Charging. That 3 HOURS to Fully charge both.
Case has 12 Magnets! To hold it on & charge.

That difference in design -- for good or ill -- is kind of the whole point of the Oasis, according to the Kindle design team.

Wouldn't a charging port in the cover add extra weight?

Though it would be pretty dumb not to have one in the cover too, it would be far more useful if you could charge it independently.

From what I have seen, only the reader has a USB port, the cover does not.

Amazon tells me it expects some owners to always detach the Oasis completely and use it bare; that way, it's the most lightweight. Others, though, will leave the charging cover in place; even then, it's slimmer than the Kindle Voyage with its origami case attached.

With the battery in the Oasis alone, Amazon says you should be able to read for two weeks - that's assuming 30 minutes per day, mind, and with the wireless turned off. With the charging cover lending its power, meanwhile, you should get nine weeks in all under the same conditions.

Sensibly, when the Kindle has the charging cover attached and is plugged in, it'll prioritize getting the Oasis recharged. A full charge of both should take around two hours.

Okay, where is this clearly stated?

I was just going by the report on Kindle Chronicles. The podcaster states that the case also has a USB port.

The clarity of the screen is the same as the Kindle Paperwhite and that's not a premium device. The lighting isn't even adaptive like it is on the Voyage. The design is similar to very old readers except for requiring the use of a cover to get even decent battery life.

So I still have to ask where the premium is except for the price.

So No reason they cant sell the Reader Without cases! $8!! Far cry from the $60+ extra
