I really don't think this thread has a topic anymore
Staying on topic is not something that MR is known for.

I don't think any discussion board is known for staying on topic.

I hope it doesn't end in 2012, I have a lot of retirement money I intend to blow in about 20 years.

Sony vs Kindle purchases

Well, for me, I bought and love the PRS 505 in December but I really wanted the Kindle 2, so (sigh) bought the Kindle 2 with the intent of selling my "gently used" 2 month Sony. I am sure to get back most of my money from the Sony so the purchase of the Kindle won't be quite so painful!
Can't wait for next week to get here!

Sony vs Kindle purchases

Since early December, I had been researching e-book readers to purchase, and like many others, my choice came down to the Amazon Kindle or the Sony Reader. The decision was tough, and it took me well over a month to make a decision. I had certain criteria that had to be met, but I knew that I would have to compromise in the end.

Eventually though, publishers will push for more formats, don't you think? Wishful thinking?

(oops, a little off topic, I thought I was starting my own thread). Sorry.

That's a very valid point. If MP3 players had started with that mindset I don't think there would be anything but the IPOD and I still wouldn't have one as opposed to the 3 Zunes I have.

There were, of course, mp3 players before the iPod.

I realize that, but my point is I can go anywhere for music with a Zune, a Zen, and many other devices. I am stuck going to only one source to load onto my MP3. That is not the case (I think) with an IPOD, right? You have to get stuff only from the Mac store?

Not true. There are plenty of converters online to convert music files (iPod models using the most up-to-date firmware support "AAC, Protected AAC {from iTunes Store}, MP3 , MP3 VBR, Audible {formats 2, 3, and 4}, Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV"). I generally convert my music files to mp3.

It seems that IPOD people have to go through more than I do with my Zune.

No lock-in with the iPods. You can use any mp3 files on 'em.

For the newest models (iPhone/Touch), you do need to use iTunes to sync your music to the device. For other iPod models there are plenty of third-party software options for this.

You can even buy MP3's from Amazon and import them right in to iTunes... I believe Amazon has an app that will automatically transfer your purchases from them into iTunes for you...

I still know lots of folks who prefer Amazon's store to iTunes since Amazon has had DRM free music for a year or so... iTunes only rolled out DRM free music last month and isn't fully DRM free yet...

So... do you think we can expect that to happen for readers in the future? So that if I prefer the Sony model I would eventually be able to shop around for content including places like amazon and the format will become a moot consideration?
