Personally I own a kindle 1, and I love it. My wife owns a 505 and she enjoys her ebook device as much as i enjoy mine. However she cant find the same titles I have for my kindle for her 505. Does that mean she is going to go out and buy a kindle 2 nope. First reason is that the Whispernet still doesnt work outside the US, which sucks for me because I'm stationed in europe now. So either way if I use my kindle or my wifes 505, I still have to plug it into the computer.
The major difference is the content available to the Kindle, compared to that of the PRS 505. Amazon has more contact with publishers than Sony does (I think....). After all the PRS 505 isnt really where Sony makes there money now is it (i.e.PS3)? Now if Amazon were to make Whispernet available to Europe, I would have pre-ordered already. |

Well, yes, that is news to me. All I ever saw was posts from Kovid giving all the reasons why Calibre would never support mobi, and so I just gave up and stopped hoping.
So, maybe I'll give the program a second look now. It honestly looked great, but had no functionality for me before. |

In my opinion, Sony is spreading itself thin with all of these products to spend money on in R&D, and it kind of limits the amount of attention that my PRS-505 might get over their new blu-ray player or PS3 (i.e. updates, ebookstore, etc) Amazon's main product is the Kindle. Plain and simple. They are going to perfect it. I will pick up the next model without a question. |

In the last year I've been impressed with how Sony has been demonstrating that they are listening to their ebook reading customers.
1) Updated the firmware for the PRS-505 to support ePUB 2) Offered a (token) rebate to PRS-500 customers to upgrade to the PRS-505 3) Introduced a PRS-700 with an integrated light (one of the largest complaints I've seen about e-ink) 4) Made the following quote in the Adobe announcement... Quote:

My husband and I got each other refurbed Kindles for Christmas (thanks to the pre-Christmas Oprah sell-out one week before I went to order his as a surprise), and we love them. We knew it was likely that K2 would come out sometime after Chrstmas, either fulfilling the old orders or once those had been filled. But we knew we liked what the original model offered, so we went ahead and ordered. Sure, we're a little envious now about Kindle 2, and there are some features we like better on our originals. But we are happy and probably won't upgrade until ours are broken (hopefully a long time).
Basically, what I'm saying is don't regret getting the Sony - you picked the device you liked, you can use it, and then when it's time to upgrade, you'll know better what you're looking for in a reader. It's just the nature of technology. And RickyMaveety, I see the guinea pirate and I'm SO STARTLED. |

Future of Amazon
I love amazon, I was really biased toward the kindle, but ended up going with a Sony because I really wanted to be able to organize collections, and I didn't want to wait around for any possible bugs to be worked out in the first couple months of launch.
Mostly I'm going to be getting public domain books, but for my occasional bestseller books, I'm disappointed in not being able to use Amazon. Do you guys think in the future they will open up to offer more formats? Or do you think they will limit the bookselling in order to boost sales of the kindle? Wouldn't it be nice if all the readers were compatible and you could just go with what you like the best and expect the same available content? In my dreams. Eventually though, publishers will push for more formats, don't you think? Wishful thinking? (oops, a little off topic, I thought I was starting my own thread). Sorry. |

I can't really get the kindle since I'm not in the USA but I was just reading up about the kindle 2 out of curiosity and I am floored they removed the sd slot for 2 gig of internal memory.
This would be a total deal breaker for me. I use a HTC Advantage for reading and keep all my library on it, which is slowly getting larger and larger. Getting close to 1 gig now in my library. It would drive me nuts to reach a point where I had no room left to keep all my books on a device or sorted on a sd card for it. I realise you could still keep them on pc or redownload from Amazon but it would be a pain for me to choose what to delete and what to keep. I re read a lot. I just had to comment. I am totally floored! ![]() Otherwise it looks like a nice device. Last edited by bjkel; 02-17-2009 at 11:39 AM. Reason: Added comment |

If they are selling it at a price that is higher than their costs to produce it, than they are making money. If they are selling it at a price that is lower, like DirecTV does for their receivers, than it depends on whether the average Kindle users buys enough e-books from Amazon to make up the difference. |
