On the subject of the new firmware...

I just wanted to report: no battery problems here for me. 53% when I went to sleep, 52% when I woke up--normal IME with the A1. Page turns definitely seem faster (they're just about on par with my PW3 now). And if my eyes don't deceive me, contrast may have improved as well.

Bear in mind that the 300-500 cycles life span is a conservative estimate based on near 100% discharge each cycle. If don't let the battery go below about 50% each cycle then you should get 1200-1500 cycles. So let's say you're recharging twice a week at no lower than 50% DoD per cycle. At 1200 cycles that's 600 weeks or about 11 years as a rough worst case estimate.

(Kudos to John F for referencing Battery University. Good source of factual information.)

Has anyone gotten this an an OTA update, that is one that Kobo did automatically rather than you loading it on your Kobo?

Just wondering since usually Geoff has his patches out by now. Not demanding anything of him of course, but an update Kobo doesn't actually want going out just yet would probably be one which could skip getting patched.

Possibly work and life are getting in the way? I don't use that many patches and most of those patches are multiversion ones that still work. I modified the page breaks bug (librmsdk patch) to modify the bytes at 2C098C instead of 2C08E4 (from 8110) and seems to be working so far.

I'm not too worried. I treat my devices well! Still, it is a bit annoying to have to charge so often. Keeping the Aura HD handy for when the ONE is on the charger....

I don't think I could make do with only the Aura ONE because of the shorter battery life.

You mean to say that within the span of a day you don't have two hours when you are not reading and are otherwise unable to charge the KA1, including when you're asleep?

Even assuming the battery only lasts one week, 2 hours within 168 seems like a pretty fair trade off for downtime.

Just to make sure I understand, 1200-1500 is half charges (according to battery U), which equates to 600-750 full charges?

And that is the 50% number. if you recharge at 25%, you are at 500-625 full charges, and if you charge at 10%, you are at 375-470 full charge cycles.

The 10% number is interesting, to me, in regards to the Oasis: a lot of short charges because people are saying they put it in the cover when they set it down.

Yes. It might make more sense to look at total power over time. Take a 1000 mAh (1 Ah) battery. Assuming 100% DoD and 300 cycles it can store and deliver 300 Ah over its life. Assuming 50% DoD and 1200 cycles (from 50% to full) it can store and deliver 600 Ah. And assuming 25% DoD and 2000 cycles (from 75% to full) it can deliver 500 Ah. Bear in mind that these are idealized figures which do not account for wear over time and other factors but it's enough to get the idea across.

yep, he made that post about 2 hours after I made mine in this thread. I saw it just before I was going to bed, so naturally I updated and patched before that. Thanks for pointing it out to others in this thread though!

I like to have the reader handy because I often wake up and need to read a bit to get back to sleep. Don't have a place to charge it in the bedroom. I'm fine with having 2 readers, one goes on the charger, the other is then available.

I'm a 'pick up' reader, any time I have a spare moment, I pickup my reader and read, even if it's only a few pages.

Don't install on any Kobo other than a Mark 6 device. That means it's a no to the Glo.

I completely agree. In fact, I've pretty much gone back to using my H20 instead of the One, simply because the battery on the One needs to be charged so often. I never realized how important a longer battery life means to me until now. On my H20, I can read a thousand-page book on one charge, so I got used to charging and loading new books only after I finished reading an entire book. When I read on the One, I am constantly thinking about the stupid battery. I love the clarity and the size of the One, but the short battery life is extremely disappointing to me.
