Interesting. I didn't really wait very long before I downloaded the update. I just checked a book first and it wasn't there yet, then I went to update. So there probably wasn't enough time on my end for it to appear without the update.

What Generation do I have???
I am interested in getting the 5.8.1 update now because I want my dots back now Anyway, I can't figure out what version Paperwhite I have! My serial no. starts with 90D4 so it is a Paperwhite 2. Great. But, Amazon's download page lists everything by Generation number Can anybody help me determinine what Generation my 90D4 Paperwhite is? How do I find that? Thank you so much.

Kindle PW1 = 5th generation
Kindle PW2 = 6th generation
Kindle PW3 = 7th generation

Also if you accidentally download the wrong firmware it won't install.

paperwhite2 -- apparently someone at Amazon agrees with our classification system.

The reason you asked us was, of course, because Amazon does NOT give you any way of knowing which generation your Kindle is based on something easily distinguishable like serial numbers.
But now you know my secret.

Append /touch or /paperwhite or /kindledx or similar to get specific models. I had to play around with different possibilities and not all the newer models got a special link (does the linky guy not work there anymore???) but it is pretty handy.

Difference in appearance is pretty clear on the back sides. On the back of Kindle Paperwhite 1 the logo is Kindle, while it turns to Amazon on the Kindle Paperwhite 2.

Kindle Paperwhites Turn themselves on and the wireless on to get the update????

My Kindle spends 99.9% of the time in Airplane mode. (I dont use the experimental browser, and do any book shopping on the computer. Maybe every few months I will find something buy it and then turn the Kindle off Airplane mode to let Amazon send it.)

So this is the Situation..

A few months ago (6 months?) when the last update was installed on my Kindle, I had bought a book and turned off Airplane mode to get it. Later that day I saw my Kindle was updating, and was thinking I was sure I had turned off the Wireless, but maybe I had forgotten, so oh well...

But Last night I noticed that while the cover was closed there was a glow from the screen, I thought the auto shut off when the cover was closed had broken so I opened it up to check it and discovered the kindle we in the middle of installing an update....

WTF?!?! I KNOW the wireless was off, (Airline mode) and the Kindle was in sleep mode with the cover closed, so the Kindle had to have woken up and turned on its wireless to check for and start downloading the update and install it...

Am I going to have to delete the wireless passwords from my Kindle to keep it from going online unless I want it to?

No, it certainly doesn't turn WiFi on by itself. That would defeat the whole purpose of "Airplane Mode".

This has not been my experience at all. The same as your Kindle, mine (both PW2 and Voyage) are almost always in airplane mode--can't remember the last time I turned on the wi-fi. But they have never turned wi-fi on by themselves to download the new firmware. I'm still running firmware version 5.7.4--haven't bothered yet to download updates to 5.8.1. And I updated to 5.7.4 (by downloading the firmware files) quite a while after it was out--neither of my kindles turned on wi-fi spontaneously without my permission.

Same here. I've had Kindles since the days of the K3. They are always in airplane mode (because it doubles the battery life). None has ever spontaneous updated itself. That's at least half a dozen different Kindle models.
