I read that as creating a new user.

@eschwartz: Ah, right, should really put my glasses on ;p.

In which case, useradd is your friend instead of mangling the shadow db manually.

Why do you need a new user? Any special reason?

Because it's, like, really cool and stuff to add users through the sheer power of text file manipulation?

As I said before -- for the purpose of running Kindle hacks, there is zero utility value in adding a new user.
All the hacks run as root anyway, from the jailbreak script as a component of upstart, on through to KUAL.
Granted, some things could be reworked for the sheer joy of using extra users, if anyone cared to bother.
KISS is what I say.

You would need a new user if two or more people where intended to log onto your Kindle at the same time.
(And they should each have their own user ID number and default directory - not all of them re-using 'root'.)

I.E: Approximately never.

I noticed near the serial pins there are three jumpers, each about the size of a button: "USB Boot," "ON/OFF," and "Reset."

In guessing reset just reboots the thing, right?

But what does "USB Boot" do?

Going by the label, boots from USB (a special format bootable file).

More details, see:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=249979

Which is for the KT2 but includes information general to all of the i.MX6 based Kindles.

AND - - -
There is an open question or two about the actual implementation on a PW2 board. Question(s) you could provide the answer(s) to.
Details also in the same thread above.

Reading that thread, I don't know exactly what I'd need to do. Do I just short the two pins you mentioned on each of S501 and S502?

Also, is there a USB-boot jailbreak file?

Might USB boot not also be the "USB downloader" mode/fastboot thingy we could achieve on the Touch with the 'magic' poweron button sequence?

I expect that is what it will turn out to be - the same thing.
But I just don't have even a moment to check it out.

Hello,
Just wanted to say thanks for the tutorial. With a bit of learning as i went I was able to follow this and jailbreak my PW2. I know its an old thread, but its the response that comes up when you google for a PW2 jailbreak.

Instead of installing python, I converted the script to javascript and hosted it online at Kindle Paperwhite 2 root password and also made a .Net program (attached).

Kindletool will also generate the password(s) for you, and is kept up to date with Amazon changes, see:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=225030

Which is available for Linux, MacOSx and Windows.
