Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom by Cory Doctorow (Nebula Nominee 2004)

A Plague of Demons by Keith Laumer (Nebula nominee 1965)
A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr. (Hugo winner 1961)

Yes, Canticle is back. Hopefully this one is not stuck in "large print" mode.

Just another pitch on an impressive book: check out Spin by Robert Charles Wilson.
Alas - the listing is indeed for the Large Print Edition from the Virginia Woolf Foundation.

Nice! This is handy for me, I'm a sci-fi fan but have big gaps in my reading that I need to patch. Good to know how well the store scores for this genre.

  • "Stranger in a Strange Land" by Robert A. Heinlein

We GAINED:
  • "Brasyl" by Ian McDonald -- Nominated for Hugo in 2008
  • "Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell" by Susanna Clarke -- Won WFC (2005) & Hugo (2005)
  • "War Surf" by M. M. Buckner -- Won Philip K. Dick (2005)
  • "Hyperthought" by M. M. Buckner -- Nominated Philip K. Dick (2003)

Don't know if it counts as SciFi - but we've gained:

"The Prisoner" - Thomas Disch
"The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories" - Susanna Clarke

Cool What if The Foundation Were Real?

I noticed some mentions of Asimov books on this thread. Has anyone read the Foundation Series? I read them a long time ago and enjoyed them, re-reading them today, the concepts are interesting but the style and execution leave something to be desired. I long for a deeper examination of the science of psychohistory, for example.

But what if The Foundation and the idea of a predictive historical science are not just scifi? What if there were a real Foundation dedicated to preserving human knowledge in the gap between two major civilizations? What if it were possible to actually get involved? More information here.

Good news as we approach xmas:

REMOVED from store:
"How Few Remain" by Harry Turtledove
"Cockoo's Egg" by C. J. Cherryh (I think for US folks only)
"Lord Valentine's Castle" by Robert Sliverberg (Of which I own on the kindle... wonder if I can redownload it)

We GAINED in the store:
"Fast Forward 2" by Lou Anders
(Philip K. Dick nominee 2008)
"Passage" by Connie Willis
(Winner Locus 2002, Nomination Hugo 2002, Nomination Nebula 2001)
"To Say Nothing of the Dog" by Connie Willis
(Winner Locus 1999, Winner Hugo 1999 Nomination Nebula 1998)
"Beauty" by Sheri S. Tepper
(Winner Locus 1992)
"On My Way to Paradise" by Dave Wolverton
(Philip K. Dick nomination 1989)
"The Uplift War" by David Brin
(Winner Locus 1998, Winner Hugo 1998, Nomination Nebula 1987)
"The Big Time" by Fritz Leiber
(Winner Hugo 1958)

Im shocked at the LVC removal... thats a huge classic.. one of my favorites, but whatever Amazon. Also note that the C.J. book said unavailable in the US territory. I think things have only BEGUN to get complicated with ebook rights.

My awards list recommendation this month:
Ilium by Dan Simmons. Fantastic... I can't decide what is the better book I have read this year: Spin or Ilium.

Oh and if you have an iphone and read RSS feeds on your mobile device, check out this: www.dyerware.com.

Why would they lose books? I don't quite get that.

This is a huge loss. While I enjoyed it, I didn't think it was the greatest book ever, but losing one of the most famous SciFi titles ever doesn't seem like a good thing.

Sometimes a publisher thinks they have the right to sell an ebook in a given country, but they don't and it gets withdrawn. Or perhaps it is just a mistake (i.e. it should be available).

In the case of "Stranger in a Strange Land" it is available at almost all US ebook stores, except Amazon. I don't see why B000TO0TDK is "not available for customers from: United States", since ACE is a long standing US publisher and is now part of Penguin Group (USA).

what wallcraft said, but to add: ebooks are becoming significant in sales, so now you get everyone looking over their properties and rights. Amazon now has international territories in the store and a few other changes in the last few months to iron this stuff out.

One of the funniest cases I've come across is a book I bought: A Canticle for Leibowitz ... the kindle version is only the large print edition. Think about that, lol. On a device that you can pick your own font size, how does someone with the rights to the large print version publish it? The answer is to only let you pick from three font sizes (ridiculously big down to too big). I read the whole book that way.

But again, everyone is trying to figure this new market out.

btw, Canticle was pulled from the store again, just FYI.

According to C. J. Cherryh's website, that's why her ebooks were pulled down. At some point she and a couple of other writers plan to sale ebooks from their own website. I have no idea why she doesn't just use Amazon.

I'm sure she will. If she doesn't it would be silly. Self publishing is very easy with the kindle.

The "Closed Circle" is open for business

Yep, it's up and running now.
CJ Cherryh, Jane Fancher, and Lynn Abbey have their store open.
Not the full catalog yet, but a couple of freebies as well as the paid selection.
Fancher's 'Netwalker: GroundTies is a great freebie, first in a series that I am now hooked on.

And next year they may hook up with Amazon... with higher prices, and DRM, no doubt, unlike buying direct from the authors...

Cheers - pholy

I'd really like downbelow station in Kindle. I have the paperback. Now that my new Kindle 2 is here I really don't want to read the paperback!!

Ill take her books any way they are provided, but I can't be the only one that would prefer she offer them in the amazon ecosystem.

The advantage is I can buy her books when I REALLY need one (on the road or at the airport through the amazon store), not to mention the amazon wishlist and searching access though the Kindle store. In several years usage (including my original K1) I have never bothered to dock my kindle or use the internet with it (other than demoing that I can for some pointless reason painfully view a web page on eink).

Hey, C. J., want a few $ to cover Amazon's cut? No problem
