Also excuse my ignorance (this is my first eReader 'n all) but what would this look like in practise?... does this mean an actual font that isn't on the device being embedded into the .epub container itself for display? How do epubs normally handle this if I elect a different system font?
Thank you for your help.

The version of For the Win that's not for Sony Readers is the one you want. It has Fontin embedded. You'll know it's working very easily. I do hope it works. But if not, then a bug report can be filed while Kobo is working on the firmware and maybe get this fixed one and for all (if it is indeed broken).

You should get it now anyway, but manually works too, although not recommended/officially supported.

The new firmware fixes the internal storage error. Yes, you have not been plagued with it. But you could. Nobody seems to know what triggers it. My suggestion is to download it so you won't have the error.

Processing Content... for a very long time

I got the 1.9.10 through the kobo desktop. After it installed on the Kobo, my home page was not showing my last 5 books. When I went to Books and Shortlist, there was nothing there. It was the page as if I had just gotten my Kobo for the 1st time. I checked to make sure the Device Info said it was 1.9.10 (and it is) but it also stated that there was 248 MB on it already used.

I restarted, and I still didn't see any of my books. I plugged it into the computer to check if my folders of epubs were still there and they were. When I unplugged (after doing the eject steps), the Kobo showed the "Processing Content" black screen. But it's been like that for the past 20 minutes now. Is this normal behavior?

I remember the first time I loaded books onto the Kobo, it took a long time, but didn't recall if it really should be taking this long.

Assuming you're on 56k, it should only take about an hour and a half (4MB per minute, roughly) to download. If you've got a decent download manager that can handle resumes (and which can turn off threading/making multiple connections to a site to trick it into serving faster), which you really should when on dialup as it makes life a LOT easier, just set it to download and turn off the computer when finished before you go to bed or go out for the evening or whatever.

I just gave it a try on my KT and though the fonts appear to display correctly (I can read it, that is) the margin setting is not applied to this book, with the text occupying all the horizontal space on the screen regardless, and the page number hiding the last line(s) of each page.

To fix that last part, I have to go in the font menu and "touch" one of the settings (changing back and forth), then it seems to flush the page and display it properly.

There are also very few empty lines separating paragraphs...

Can you get a photo of the screen as it defaults?

The margins are set to no margins. as for the empty lines, I don't have any except as separators. To me, paragraph spaces just look awful and provide a poor reading experience. Same with wide margins. So I strep the margins and strip paragraph spaces.

I do feel that publishers can go a long way to making better looking eBooks and that includes Kindle eBooks. Even a 1/2 line space is too much when it's not needed.

Fair enough about margins and empty lines, this is your choice. It just struck me as "different" and I wouldn't know whether it was intended.

See the attached image. The page displays like that when I start reading the book, and remains the same as I turn the pages, until I go and pretend to change something in the font menu where it displays correctly ever after (i.e until I exit the book and go back into it).

You could have done the manual update without doing a factory reset.

I didn't do a factory reset to do the update. I had the storage error and lost all my books yesterday. I didn't want to put my books back on until I had updated my Kobo in case I got the error again.

This release included some database changes, so Calibre needs to recognize and work with them. I think timlegge works on that, I'll try to contact him.
