I totally agree with this statement.
I constantly hacked my el-cheapo devices. Loaded and tried everything in the book to them. I even completely killed my little Witts, as did several other folks on the forums (I did discover a way to resurrect it and sell it).

But we're talking about devices under $250. Paying several hundred dollars more totally changes the equation. All of sudden modding becomes too risky for the expense. I didn't cry when I killed my $150 tablet... but my wife would either divorce me or murder me for killing a $500+ device. LOL

I've considered buying a Nook Color just to fiddle with, but even that is...

I'm going to have to agree with HansTWN on this. (Not about the fun part though).

My experience with Android has been that the fixes provided by third parties are often better than what is produced by the original manufactures.

My Vibrant phone was plagued with bugs and hardware that did not work properly. After being frustrated with no updates I decided to ROM my phone.

I tell you the ROM I chose made everything work flawlessly, it came with an overclocked kernel and removed the stock bloatware. My phone was faster than ever and more reliable than before.

The same goes with my nook. Going with stock 2.1 nook was painful. Right now I'm running CM7 and it is truly and awesome tablet.

Again both devices are far more functional and stable now after the ROMing than when I purchased the device.

The real trick is to do your research and find out what ROM is right for you, I don't install random hacks out on the net. I usually weigh the features that are added and the reputation of the person providing them.

So, how are you going to find out what ROM is right for you? The only way, besides reading, is installing. You are taking a risk anyway.

I even can afford losing or bricking my Galaxy Tab if I make a mistake, but for a device that most people people 500 or more, I would not recommend making experiments or test and see how it goes. Most of the time you can revert changes, others you cannot. So the risk is higher than the benefit, at least to me.

Also, "how much you value" your spare time; or changing the question a bit, how much spare time you have for playing with your device? I don't know about you, but I'm really busy to spend hours searching and installing third party ROMs. I did it for my HTC cellphone and I'm still dealing with minor issues after several tries. So I gave up and will sell it on Amazon and buy a used stock Android phone instead.

Actually, Amazon spent no time optimizing anything. They just used the already existing eink display. If you want to praise anyone, praise eink corporation.

Sorry, but I disagree. Lab126 did and continues to do a lot of research/work optimizing the reading experience for the Kindle-including the desired screen display and size.

Not so. Sony had a 6" eink screen device out before the Kindle was even a thought. So Lab26 could not have dome this mysterious research. Amazon just used what was out there and what was out there was the eink Vizplex screen that Sony and others were or were going to be using. So sorry, no way there was research done.
