I love this. I used to drive my kids mad by telling it with all kinds of animals substituted for the cow. I overextended myself once though when I picked the squirrel. Only to realise, who knows what noise a squirrel makes?

I told my five year-old that one last night. He howled with laughter and then we had a fifteen minute knock-knock joke festival with almost anything being substituted for the cow.

I don't know about British squirrels, but Yankee squirrels have a distinctive loud chattering noise.
