Engineering requires a compromises; there are other models in the lineup for those who don't like this particular one.

Then why have the mandatory battery cover to begin with? A $10 lipstick battery pack is smaller, lighter, and ridiculously easy to use to get the extended battery life.

For all the things the Kindle does, there are so many more it doesn’t. Amazon continues paring down the Kindle, even as it introduces so many features—Audible audiobooks, the Alexa voice assistant, and, I don’t know, Dash buttons—that might make perfect sense on its e-reader. Amazon all but insists such things are not the point of Kindle. Kindle is for reading. Nothing more. Everything about its performance, its design, its software, reflects that. You want to do other stuff? Buy other stuff. Now, you could argue that some added features would be nice, like waterproofing (there better be no water in your Oasis), but Amazon lives by the mantra less is more. Because less is paper.

Also uglier, easier to forget, and downright inelegant.

The extra battery eliminates the grippy bulge, and the front cover comes in any of three attractive colors and materials. It feels like it’s meant to be part of the device, and doesn’t make it big or unwieldy at all.

I've been reading this thinking that waterproofing wouldn't be useful for me, but then I remembered the time I dropped an ereader in the snow. Bad move. Or the many times I've wanted to continue reading when it's raining at the bus stop waiting for my kid. I live somewhere with lots of various kinds of precipitation, and waterproofing would have saved me one ereader so far, and would have helped me continue reading a good number of times where I chose to stop to save my device from water.

Right so, if I get this right:
The bulge is a plus because it makes it easier to hold but the cover is a plus on top of the plus, because erm, it negates the bulge? And so really it's like having a single device except that you're stuck with the Amazon cover, which doesn't actually cover the whole of the back so isn't quite a cover.
