Interesting. It looks like the Merlot color is the most popular in the US--when I add one with a Merlot cover to my cart, I get a delivery date of September 2, compared to June 6 for the Walnut and May 16 for the black.

That was yesterday as of now the UK dates are:

- Black April 29
- Merlot June 20
- Walnut June 21

Maybe they are using some the European stock for the US. It looks better if it's on backorder everywhere

I can't help but wonder how many might be returned.

It's not misleading. You don't need a cover for the H2O to achieve it's battery life of 8 weeks. To get the 9 week battery life of the Oasis, the battery case is required; otherwise, you'll only get 2 weeks.

That's why the Oasis is heavier than most other ereaders.

Irrelevant, since a cover isn't required to get its claimed battery life. Not so for the Oasis, where its special battery cover is required.

US sales taxes range from 0% to just a tad over 10%.

It seems to me that many of the detractors really want the new Kindle, but aren't willing to spend the asking price for it. This explains the derision for those who are willing to pay for it, as it threatens to encourages Amazon and delays any anticipated pricing reductions that they're hoping Amazon might otherwise offer.

People keep talking about the poll in the Kindle forum. In that poll, almost 1/5 of the respondents indicated that they are likely to purchase it. If those numbers were extrapolated out to a 4 device lineup (Basic, PW, Voyage, Oasis), I'm betting Amazon would be very happy to see the top-end device making up 20% of its sales, with the bulk of their sales coming from the middle tier devices.

And inadvertently, that poll captures what Amazon is attempting to do. It's unscientific, but that big 60% + number at the bottom (No, nada, never) still represents a sale to Amazon. Those people aren't leaving the ecosystem; they're just purchasing Kindle models other than the Oasis.

And I still think this body style migrates downstream in a year or two.

September 2nd? Did Amazon only stock 4 units for release, or is this device really that popular.

It's called "click-bait" and it's a stupid, evil marketing trick that makes me never want to read anything from the site again.

I don't think most us object to the style of the device. It's the split battery and the added expense of the battery case that has to be included that's the issue. And No most us don't WANT the new Kindle as it just won't work for us.

Light and thin isn't difficult to achieve when you remove 78% of the battery and make it thicker on one side. To get the full battery life, the battery cover is required; and then it's no longer light and thin. It's now heavy and thick.

Nope, sorry I wouldn't want it even if it were cheaper. Others are free to buy one if they wish, what they do with the money is none of my business. And Amazon don't do usually do pricing reductions in the UK.

This is MR, we're not your your typical average customers Normally you'd get people jumping on a new toy, and would expect 70% to say they're getting one
