I recall the year, 1974, well. As to the number of letters, a lot. Maybe 20,000? Sadly as I also recall a lot of the letters were hate mail from people who did not want a black man breaking Ruth's record.

I don't know the kids name, but I remember hearing the story about a kid who had cancer and wanted to set the world record for the most get well cards. It went viral on the net, and she received millions of cards and kept receiving them for years -- even after beating cancer.

Yes, it was 1974. Hank was one run short at the end of the 73 season. He received over 900,000 letters. Many were hate mail sadly. He had to have bodyguards due to all the death threats.
