Meh...maybe another 3 inches of lift.

Though with a plow I could have made some crazy money the last day or so.

Yeah man, that's the approach. Expecially on a train that I will take for the next 15 years. No doubt that I will translate those lines into suitable essential body motions, mostly with eye lids ...

and I am convinced that she actually gave me a look (or might have, should have? how could she not) and after that she smiled. I am pretty sure. I was. I am. Will see. Maybe tomorrow she will get the same train, same car, same seat. Ah.

The tidal surge is in far north Queensland and it's there they are warning people against going to the coast (a second surge was/is expected this morning). I am 1300km away in southeast Queensland at the north end of the Sunshine Coast, and the beaches remain open and patrolled. In a relatively average (to my experience) 2m/6.5' swell, I am "safe" (within certain parameters confined by my own bodybashing ability ). I will only rarely swim on unpatrolled beaches (only in safe conditions in safe areas), and never on a "closed" beach.

Cheers,
Marc

Kept posted on Facebook to my niece in Townsville last night during the cyclone - an odd experience! At one stage she was sending a message via her phone whilst the roof was threatening to go! But it seems as though she got through it OK - I am still waiting to hear what damage has been done, it is still too dangerous to go outside and they have no power.

No, it was gone, despite much trawling. We will go back in a week and see if the water level has dropped any more, and try find it. It will certainly be wrecked, but the SD cards are a lot more resilient and I might be able to recover that if I find the camera. I don't know why I didn't take the waterproof Olympus with me instead.

Marc

Social media adds a significant immediacy and empathy over news reports when "ordinary" people in the midst of events are recording their experiences and emotions as they go. I stayed up way too late last night following such via Twitter.

I hope all is reasonably well for your niece, and that that wellness keeps expanding out to all affected to a greater degree than anticipated.

Cheers,
Marc

I was so glad to be able to be in touch with her - being able to commicate with the outside world during these disasters must keep people a little more sane. Also says a lot for our 3G and NextG network!

We did *not* get nearly the sleeting that was predicted. There's about 3 feet total, and huge plow piles and drifts, but no power outages thank goodness. Is everyone down in Oz okay?

Three feet in the ski resorts and mountainous areas in Oz would be considered an absolute monstering. In most other areas of Australia any snow would be considered a sign of the End Days.

I don't know anyone in the region affected myself, and can't recall any MR folks from the region. There are a lot of power-outage-affected homes and damaged communications, so an MR person from the area might have some difficulty keeping in touch at the moment. For what it's worth, a good place for up-to-date news on TC Yasi can be found here:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/events/cyclone-yasi/

and Bureau of Meteorology stuff on current tropical cyclones (such as Yasi), amongst all the other weather data, can be found here:
