For Australians the best choice currently available locally would be the Kobo. It has local support, firmware upgrades at hopefully regular intervals and is an economical purchase.

I have no idea what the Kogan would be like as there has been no reviews as yet

Yeah, it's too unknown. The Oaxis device has existed for months but I can't find a review anywhere, probably because Kogan's the first to on-sell it (although it does seem to exist as something with 'Sistem' (sic) in the name, but ominously I can't find a review of that either).

I'm pretty much sold on the Kobo (boot time and weird bookmarks notwithstanding) but I don't want to buy one the day before a discount or price drop. I could live with it if it happened, but I'd rather not.

I doubt a price drop would happen here soon. (famous last words?) The Kobo is selling too well here at $199 and being sold locally in bookshops means it is much more visible to the serious or casual bookworm than the Kindle.

Technology prices have been deflationary for decades. Buyer's remorse is par for the course, because next week somebody will announce a game-changing price drop.

Yes, the assumption that everybody wants more features and a lot of itty-bitty buttons is not necessarily a valid one.

Oh, and I haven't made a really thorough search, but has anybody mentioned that the price of the Kobo went down by $20 two weekends ago (but just for that weekend)? Oh -- I see that it has been discussed!

Fortunately (or unfortunately as it might be), by the early 1990s, it was more or less assumed that computers would be obsolete in a few years, so they stop making them as robust as they use to. If you have an old IBM PC or PC-XT, there is an excellent chance that it will still work, but your 486.... Probably not .

I generally like to be 6 months to a year behind the cutting edge on technology. Prices tend to drop enough in that period to make it a reasonable purchase, but the technology is still up to date enough that I don't feel like a dinosaur for a year or two.

For the record, I've worked in IT for 15 years and am used to gadget deflation. My question about the Kobo price-drop was part of my research, not a precursor to sour grapes.

Given early comments about the Kogan Reader on Whirlpool (good build quality potentially undone by patchy firmware), my Kobo decision might be made for me. No imminent price drop seems likely after yesterday's Kobo blog post talked up the massive demand.

(Sorry for bad English, me have cold, sentence construction very tragedy today.)

Seems my initial private concerns about the Kogan have been correct.

On an aside, I saw the Pico, Hanvon and iriver Story last night at JB HiFi and both my wife and I were left unimpressed.

The iriver story looked remarkably like a Kindle 2, more than images I saw previously led me to believe.

Mine too. Kobo's very good at responding to customers and releasing firmware updates, but Oaxis/whatever-it's-called may well just let the Kogan Reader off the leash and focus on something else. If that transpires it's not good enough, considering the fact that two significant bugs were found on day one.

I played with a demo unit of the Pico and something else (the Hanvon?) at JB last weekend. The something-else unit had a nasty off-white fake-reptile surface that looked and feeled like a nanna's purse in the '60s. Both of them were broken, both had horrible clicky buttons, and both were more expensive than the Kobo (although, to be fair, both probably have far superior functionality).

I've never owned an e-ink reader, but at least I've done some research. Anyone walking in off the street to play with those JB demo units would just stick with treebooks.

The Hanvon was the 5" reader you might have seen.

IMHO, the Kobo is far superior at least in appearance and form. I was not impressed by the menu arrangement on any of them, including the AU$320+ iriver Story.

Got a Kobo today for the standard AU$200. Thanks for your advice, sabredog.

I can't report on it because it's still charging. Setting the time and date was nice, though.

Good stuff. Is it running the 1.4 firmware?
