It gets the chapter title from the code near the top of the HTML file.

KF8 allows you to have your choice of font and to increase the weight if you want. Mobi is stuck with the so-so fonts Amazon supplies and Amazon prefers you use the really awful Bookerly.
I like Bookerly I'd rather the text was consistent in style across my books too...which is why I do the epubs to my own specifications. Bookerly is better than Caecillia though, and they're the best of all the fonts for reading. IMO

Last time I tried, Calibre replaced the stylesheets entirely, and all the classes--all named calibre and some number. I know why it's a better way of doing it but......I don't like it

Slab serif are not good for reading a book.

Replacing the entire CSS is not good. You should learn to edit it.

I do edit it--that's the problem. After it's been through Calibre, it's a mess and makes no sense

It should be the but that shows the chapter. Such as Chapter 1. The first text in the HTML should be the chapter header. It should be an h tag such as h1 or h2. But in a lot of cases, it's p.

The simplest most basic epub I could create, and converted to kepub via calibre

It picks up actual chapters ok, but the front matter is a mess -- like, the copyright "chapter" has 4 pages that includes dedication etc...

I messed with it for a bit then gave up on it. The h-tags didn't seem to work either, as I use them to create the "embedded" toc for the kindle, eg. to include "Also by the Author"

Oh I wonder if it's from the content.opf, taken from the <guide>...

There must be something mighty peculiar in the way you create your epubs. I've converted literally thousands of epubs to both azw3 and kepub (after editing the css/html), and nothing will get messed up if the book is reasonably well formatted.

What happens if you use the KoboTouch driver to convert to KePub as you send the ePub to your Kobo? It sounds like what you are doing is an inplace conversion to KePub which is not what you want to do.

More than likely

I don't want to use calibre though, and Kindle Previewer only does .mobi really. I can open those files and it's exactly what I've created in the epub, no code added or changed.

No idea what that is so not using it

Used calibre, some online thing, and just renaming the epub. None of them did the "chapter title" right for the front matter.

It's not that important--which is why I asked the original question. If I can gut an epub of all pretty style, layout, and fonts, basically just dump a simple text onto the device without it breaking, that'd keep me happy.

It's only for the boy he won't care. I, on the other hand, like a bit of polish. But just a little, mind...

Go to the following link and download the Star Trek ePub. I made it from the original word document. So I know it's well made.

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=177182

Also download the attached .azw3 file and load that on your Kindle. It was conversion using calibre. No editing was done to it. You should see the chapter titles correctly.

As for the front matter, that rarely has a chapter title. The front matter in this case has no chapter title.

If I remember correctly, that is from the <title>Text Goes Here</title> in the <head></head> section at the start of the xhtml file.

Personally, I just use Sigil's Preview and the optional BibiReader, EpubJSReader and ReadiumReader plugins to get an idea of what the ePub is going to look like.

Mine are usually that simple too...sometimes simpler my last book, I used just 2 additional classes for <p> and one for headings. The source had very little styling...

Calibre still added and changed a bunch in your .azw3 file though: the css file line-length is 50% longer, though it's been less aggressive in adding/changing classes...no doubt because you were so nicely concise to begin with... They mostly looked the same with tiny minor differences--no doubt due to how the Calibre editor rendered it eh.

So what is different in an azw3 file? Just an epub/rar with content.opf renamed to metadata.opf...? Which is "better" for Kindle--azw3 or kf8?

Whoa, Sigil 0.5.3? I thought I was bad, refusing to move on from 0.8.1
