Hamburgers (the people) come from Hamburg. The hamburger was invented at Louis' Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut.

Given that a hamburger is a beef patty is a bun, what would we call a burger made from ham?

Sorry, but they can't call pills tablets because, as everyone knows, tablets are clay things used in cuneiform writing.

Hahah I never really heard of "francophobia" (lucky I am a bit deaf) but when my Mam was leraning English (in 1936 or so) there was a sentence in the book: "there is always something fishy about the French" Mind you, what you call "french letters" we call "capotes anglaises"..

When a sufficient number of people give a word(or phrase) a particular meaning for it gains that meaning. Exactly how many people are needed is of course up to debate (but one is certainly not enough)
We might well quibble and argue but that will not change the fact that the meaning of nice changed over the centuries; remove the extra layer of meaning given to the word gender; consistently place electronic before computer; or even stop people from calling genric bandages bandaids. ( Trademark law means that Johnson & Johnson can stop other companies from labeling their 'fabric bandages' BAND-AIDS but they can't stop the use of the generic bandaid in ordinary speech.) |

Now on to the important topics ![]() As far as liseuse goes, I guess it depends where you Google it from or what your search history is like because I get mention of the Kobo Aura One in the very first result. It definitely isn't slang in Canada as both The Source (ie: what was once upon a time Canada's branch of Radio Shack) and BestBuy list them for sale under that name. Mind you, I didn't have to actually Google it since I understood TS from the beginning; posters insert snips of other languages all the time. I don't know why this particular instance caused a kerfuffle. As far as e-reader versus ereader goes, e-reader should never have become au courant as the name of electronic reading devices in the first place if eReader had been on the ball and protected their trademark vigilantly. And if the word e-reader came first, then they shouldn't have been granted the trademark. Either way, even Kobo refers to their devices as eReaders (see https://us.kobobooks.com/) so I certainly have no trouble calling them that. Hyphens tend to disappear over the long run in any case (does anybody still type e-mail instead of email?) Staples seems to use the variants interchangably too (https://www.staples.ca/en/Tablets-eR...5_2-CA_1_20001) as do other storefronts I visited... |

It also does one thing and one thing very well. Letting me read a book. Battery life is much better, its easier to hold and my kindle at least has buttons for page changing which is more comfortable for me than swiping. It doesn't matter how one reads, as long as one does. But I have to be able to read. Paperback fonts are too small now for me, often yellowish in older books so I need to have an ereader. Or I wouldn't be able to read my beloved books. So whatever works for you. |
