"Beginning in the early to mid-40s, many adults may start to have problems seeing clearly at close distances, especially when reading and working on the computer. This is among the most common problems adults develop between ages 41 to 60. This normal change in the eye's focusing ability, called presbyopia, will continue to progress over time"
As Harry says, all this awaits you Jon. ![]() |

One day I didn't have any problems (apart from my normal poor eyesight that is), a week later I thought "It looks like I can't focus properly anymore without a lot of effort", and a less than a week after that, I visited my optometrist. Without glasses, I could still see as normal. (That is... I'm so near sighted that without glasses, I can focus at a subject between 2 and 8 inches away.) My optometrist determined that my dioptric values had shifted from -9 and -5 to -7 and -3. In less than two weeks... more than half a decade to go until 40. |

But, an 8" screen allows you to have bigger text for non-PDF without sacrificing words-pre-line as much as a 6" screen would. So as your eyes cannot see as well, the larger text comes in handy.

I do like the size of my H20 every time I pick it up but mainly I use my Voyage or my Glo HD. I prefer the small screen and the lighter weight. Certainly for out and about I need the lightest smallest ereader going as I have a hip problem, plus case of course. I won't go down the Oasis route as I really don't like the look (or price) of that device but the Voyage with a really light and thin case works for my handbag.
As I said when I pick up the H20 I really enjoy reading on it and appreciate the extra lines and space but I don't need a bigger screen. |

I've created a comparison, on scale, between the Kindle Paperwhite and the Aura One. 1 mm = 2 pixels. The Aura One doesn't look that much bigger, to be honest.
Kindle PW: 169mm x 117mm Aura One: 195.1mm x 138.5mm It's less than three centimeter longer, and and just 2 cm wider than a 6 inch Kindle, but it offers a vastly bigger screen in that space. I'm at work (in the middle of my break); later I'll calculate the screen area to total area ratio for both. |

What I'm mostly interested in (regarding size) is the size of the screen in comparison to the 6" and 6.8" readers. You can have a huge device with only a small screen (think the Kindle keyboards)

Screen sizes:
6 inch = 100% area 6.8 inch = 128% area 7.8 inch = 169% A 7.8 vs a 6.8 inch screen has (7.8 / 6.8)^2 = 131% area advantage. KPW1 total area is: 197.73 cm² A-One total area is: 270.21 cm² The A-One is 136.7% of the size of the KPW1. Conclusion: for 36% extra size, this reader delivers 69% extra screen. That means some seriously small bezels, I think. |

A 7.8'' reader's screen has 69% more area than a 6'' reader. It has 32% more area than a 6.8'' reader.

There you go. A 7.8 inch screen is ginormous. If you want a real life example, then I can't help you there

I'll have to look into that on this side of the pond. At that price is makes for a fun gag gift. And a very useful home phone, a replacement for a landline phone. Not everything has to be easily portable: There's use cases for practically everything. |

Sweetie, next year will mark the 30th anniversary of me getting bifocals. Note I will be 51 in January. Oh and that short distance was how my husband always knew when it was time for new glasses. The book I was reading kept inching closer to my face. And yes, I had to stifle a giggle when my mom first got reading glasses. She was forever misplacing them. Now my husband has tri-focals. |
