I. What? BBQ + beer + books is a horrible idea. Leaving aside the chance for mess, the last thing - the very last thing - actual book readers want is a bar inside their bookstore.

Is B&N actively trying to get rid of book-buying customers?

I think the problem is that there just aren't enough book-buying customers to support stores of their size any more. If there were, they wouldn't have needed to branch out to CDs, DVDs, games, etc. And now CDs and DVDs are on the way out.

I'm not saying their experimental restaurant model will pan out. But I'm glad they are trying something. Because it's nice to have at least one book store in a mall, even if they have to resort to these tactics to hold on.

As one of the B&N outlier customers, I'm never going to be buying another Nook ereader unless they either put at least 32 GB on the reader or a microSD slot. The current one can't hold all of the ebooks I've purchased from B&N, forget all the ones I've purchased elsewhere or downloaded from here or Gutenberg or a few other PD sites.

A lot of the B&N's in town have a little restaurant area serving beverages and I think sandwiches, so I think the bar in the B&N in the Galleria will be no big deal. I haven't been to that one for a few years, I'll have to stop in the next time I'm in the neighborhood.
