As for the test file, I generated the translation strings with numbers myself, in order to avoid the need to apply the same changes as above. |

tshering and surquizu,
Thanks for this great thread. ;-) I've been trying to play along at home, seeing what I could do about a translation into Gaelic. Not a chance, though, of fitting it into the text string limits. For instance, "books" in (Scots) Gaelic is leabharaichean. Not going to fit that onto a menu. |

translate with imagination. For example, also in Catalan the word "book" (llibre) is longer than in Spanish (libro) and I had to put as translation "ebook" |

Hi surquizu, yes I noticed that you'd done that. Unfortunately, I think Gaelic would require so many language shortcuts to fit the menu spaces that there'd be barely any Gaelic left! (And I'm not sure what shortcuts I could even use in many of the contexts.)
Ah well. I'll keep thinking of options. Thanks for the reply. Last edited by MacEachaidh; 05-05-2015 at 06:33 AM. |

If it were possible to change the UI font as well as the strings, one could create a custom font with "eabharaichea" in some private area codepoint, and use it; the same for other problematic languages.

Nice idea! I was considering something similar in connection with the Catalan combination "l·l". The problem is we currently do not know how to activate custom fonts without opening a book. This is a problem too for Chinese translations of the GUI.

In my case, I could perhaps use Leabhar, which is the word for a single book, though it's a kludge (you can probably see it's a cognate of surquizu's Llibre -- Gaelic isn't a Latin-based language, but a lot of the words regarding knowledge and writing were influenced by the Latin-speaking clerics of the Celtic church), and it's far from the only, ermm, challenge in the translation. Anyway. Wouldn't it be a nice feature if Rakuten made the UI customisable for language localisation? Last edited by MacEachaidh; 05-05-2015 at 11:42 PM. Reason: Oops, typo. "Ratuken"? What's that? |

With some effort it is feasible to assign one or several fonts to the UI (you can find some materials in the "modification for bad eyes" thread). The problem is that nickel loads only three system fonts. And before opening a book other fonts are not available. To have another font displayed from the start, we would have to replace at least one system font with it.
Unfortunately, you are right. Attempts to do so have failed up to now. |

That was my idea, replace one system font with a custom one that's exactly the same, but has some additional "characters" in a private area (like an "ll" ligature), then translated strings could use these characters directly (write "*ibres", where * is the codepoint for this ll ligature), everything else would keep working the same.
