Lords of the Earth: An Incredible but True Story from the Stone-Age Hell of Papua's Jungle by Don Richardson looks fascinating and is on sale for $.79 at Christianbook. It's $.99 at Kobo (couponable), B&N and Amazon.

Quote:
Engulfed in the darkness of Irian Jaya's Snow Mountains live the Yali, naked cannibals who call themselves lords of the earth. Yet, in spite of their boldness, they live in terror and bondage to the women-hating, child-despising gods they serve. Missionary Stan Dale dared to enter their domain and be an instrument to change their future. Peace Child author, Don Richardson, tells the story of Dale, his wife, his companions, and thousands of Yali tribesmen in Lords of the Earth. This unforgettable tale of faithful determination and zeal against overwhelming odds brings unlikely characters together in a swirl of agony and bloodshed climaxing in a dramatic, unexpected ending. Readers will find their perceptions of how God moves enlarged and inspired by this classic story. For parents and youth leaders looking for real-life role models for the new generation of young people, you will want to meet the Dales in Lords of the Earth.

The Guidebook: The NRSV Student Bible is $3.99. The study chapter headings and study notes aren't particularly in-depth or illuminating, but this is the first I've seen an edition of the NRSV on sale in over a year. This edition does not include the Apocrypha.
B&N Amazon

Evolution of the Word: The New Testament in the Order the Books Were Written by Marcus J. Borg is $3.99. The Bible text is the NRSV and the chronology matches the consensus of secular New Testament scholarship, which will certainly disagree with more conservative chronologies. The Pastoral Epistles, for example, are placed after the Gospels and dated by the author to the early second century, some forty or fifty years after Paul's death. This obviously conflicts with the notion that they were written by Paul himself.

I'm actually a little disappointed in the book. The sample ends before any of the introductions to the individual books or Bible text itself, so I was buying the content without really knowing what I was getting. While I like the NRSV, I was hoping for a novel translation by the author. I was also hoping for more discussion of the reasons that the books were dated when they were. Instead, the author is much more focused on the theology of the Church as it evolved through the time period during which the New Testament was written. This is interesting to me and I expect to enjoy reading the book, but I was expecting a rather different book than what I got.
B&N Amazon

The NIV First-Century Study Bible: Explore Scripture in Its Jewish and Early Christian Context by Kent Dobson is $7.99. I bought this one when it was the same price in November and I've been enjoying it very much.

Update of 5-Star-Rated Classic, The Emancipation of Robert Sadler--Marked-Down 92%!

I'm putting this title in the "Christian Interest" thread, instead of the "Non-Fiction" thread because of the book's "Christian" atmosphere, overtones, allusions, and references.

My posting of this title does not indicate my agreement with any doctrinal position presented in the book.

The Emancipation of Robert Sadler, The Powerful True Story of a Twentieth-Century Plantation Slave. By Robert Sadler; Marie Chapian. Rated 5 stars, from 79 reviews at the present moment. Print list price N/A (out-of-print in paper?); digital list price $12.99; Kindle price now $0.99. Bethany House Publishers, publisher. 304 pages.http://www.amazon.com/Emancipation-R...antation+Slave.

Book Description
Powerful True Story of a Twentieth-Century Plantation Slave

Over fifty years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Robert Sadler was sold into slavery at the age of five--by his own father. This is the no-holds-barred tale of those dark days, his quest for freedom, and the determination to serve others born out of his experience. It is a story of good triumphing over evil, of God's grace, and of an extraordinary life of ministry. An updated edition of a classic title.

Free from the specialty religious small press via KDP Select @ Amazon:

The Life and Prayers of Joan of Arc by Wyatt North, presumably the founder of Wyatt North Publishing, another one of their mini-biographies in their series of such on prominent mostly-Christian spiritual figures.

One part biography, one part prayer book, The Life and Prayers of Saint Joan of Arc is an essential book for any Christian.

Though Joan described herself as “a poor girl who knew neither how to ride nor lead in war,” she did know how to obey God. That simple skill changed the course of both her life and that of the entire nation.

Twenty-five years after her execution, Saint Joan was pronounced innocent, and declared a martyr. Joan stood up for her belief and against all odds fought for her people.

She was a true hero, and remains an inspiration to this day.

This book seems better suited for posting on this thread than the "Non-Fiction" thread, because the material is oriented toward Christians and churches, and addresses some situations particular to them.

My posting of this book does not mean that I believe in or endorse any doctrinal positions presented therein.

This ebook is slated to return to its regular price after February 28, according to a source. So, you should have plenty of time to procrastinate about taking the opportunity to buy this bargain ebook. ha.

Called to Teach. By William Yount. Rated 5 stars, from 10 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $24.99; digital list price $24.99; Kindle price now $2.99. B&H Books, publisher. 260 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Called-Teach-W...alled+to+teach.

New Leaf Publishing Group has a new set of books since the last time I checked (which was a while ago) in exchange for their newsletter signup.

Buried Alive: The Startling, Untold Story About Neanderthal Man by Jack Cuozzo
Six Days: The Age of the Earth and the Decline of the Church by Ken Ham

Both books are creationist apologetics.

After signing up, you get a page with downloads of both books in mobi, epub and PDF. The site won't let you sign up multiple times with the same email, so you need to use a different email if you've signed up before. Gmail addresses with periods in them work as alternate emails (janedoe@gmail.com and jane.doe@gmail.com are the same as far as Gmail's concerned, but different addresses for the signup).

A few of the books that Baker has on sale look interesting. These are on sale pretty much everywhere and Baker books are couponable at Kobo.

A Rabbi Looks at the Last Days: Surprising Insights on Israel, the End Times and Popular Misconceptions by Jonathan Bernis is $.99.
B&N Kobo Amazon.

I bought his A Rabbi Looks at Jesus of Nazareth when it was on sale, but unfortunately haven't read it yet.

Why the Universe Is the Way It Is by Hugh Ross is on sale for $2.99.
B&N Kobo Amazon

I haven't read this book, but I've read enough of Hugh Ross's stuff to have a pretty good idea what it's about. Ross is an old-Earth creationist, which for those of you not fully briefed on the varieties of creationism, means that he thinks that the Universe began with the Big Bang fourteen billion years ago, but evolution is still right out. You can check out his website to see if this might be for you.

Free from the small press spirituality specialty publisher via KDP Select @ Amazon:

The Life and Prayers of Saint John the Baptist by Wyatt North, another one in their series of quickie biographies of iconic religious figures.

One part biography, one part prayer book, The Life and Prayers of Saint Joan of Arc is an essential book for any Christian.

In understanding true poverty, practicing total detachment, lacking pride and demonstrating only obedience, John epitomized the call of Jesus Christ for his followers to take up their cross and follow him, before the true meaning of his words were even understood.

While Jesus himself described John the Baptist as a burning and shining lamp, John understood he was born only to direct us to the light of the Savoir.

Expressing heartfelt gratitude for the sacrifice, suffering and dedication to God shown by John the Baptist, all Christians today can bask in the light of Jesus.

This edition has a linked Table of Contents and has been wonderfully formatted (searchable and interlinked) to work on your eBook reader.

Free from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:

A Light in the Window by Julie Lessman, an f/m inspirational historical romance set in 1890s Boston. This appears to be a recently-written self-pub, but Lessman is a Baker Revell imprint author who still has an official publisher promo freebie out as one of their long-term offerings and we've been given other of her Baker titles free, so if you enjoyed those, you might also like to try this.

Marceline Murphy is a gentle beauty with a well-founded aversion to rogues. But when two of Boston's most notorious pursue her, she encounters a tug-of-war of the heart she isn’t expecting. Sam O’Rourke is the childhood hero she’s pined for, the brother of her best friend and a member of the large, boisterous family to which she longs to be a part. So when his best friend Patrick O’Connor joins in pursuit of her affections, the choice seems all too clear. Sam is from a family of faith and Patrick is not, two rogues whose wild ways clash head-on with Marcy’s—both in her faith and in her heart.

While overseeing the Christmas play fundraiser for the St. Mary’s parish soup kitchen—A Light in the Window—Marcy not only wrestles with her attraction to both men, but with her concern for their spiritual welfare. The play is based on the Irish custom of placing a candle in the window on Christmas Eve to welcome the Holy Family, and for Marcy, its message becomes deeply personal. Her grandmother Mima cautions her to guard her heart for the type of man who will respond to the "light in the window," meaning the message of Christ in her heart. But when disaster strikes during the play, Marcy is destined to discover the truth of the play’s message first-hand when it becomes clear that although two men have professed their undying love, only one has truly responded to “the light in the window.”

Through illustrations and practical advice from his years as a therapist, Robert Paul helps couples discover how to make their marriage fresh and full of fun, fascination, and freedom. By addressing each gender while avoiding stereotypical extremes, Paul shows that the adventurous romance men crave seamlessly complements the romantic adventure women need.
