I agree with this, especially since the advent of the [deleted] plugin. I've bought the majority of my ebooks using Kobo's discount codes, and even after many hundreds of purchases I've only ever gotten less than a handful of kepubs, two books where the publisher link didn't work and kobo literally didn't have the ebook to download (for which I got refunds), and one pdf (and I again got a refund).

I also agree with everyone who said that Kobo has no excuse in not identifying (in words) the format of the ebook that it is advertising. I know I had the conversation with the Kobo Cust Service people in August 2013 about this, which was immediately after they introduced the new look website (and checkout) and in the process removed the format information.

I was told then that the format information was going to be re-included at a later version upgrade. That's failed to happen.

Amazon has this trilogy for 99 cents also -- and you have Kindle devices ... so, just curious why Kobo in this case?

I didn't know at first that it was also at Amazon. And sometimes it is cheaper to get a book at Kobo than at Amazon.

I've only accidentally bought kepubs twice, and both times Kobo gave me a refund without any trouble. On one of the books I'd used a large discount coupon code; they said they had no mechanism to give me back the coupon but they told me the next time I bought a book to just let them know and they'd give me a credit equal to what I would have saved with the coupon. I got the credit right away after I emailed them back, and they also sent me instructions on how to avoid the problem -- the same way that's been documented here, by getting a sample, etc. You would think, though, that it would be simpler for them to just put the file type on the product page for the book.

At least now Calibre can handle kepubs so I don't have to worry about it.

@disconnected I don't have a Kindle so didn't realise that kepubs could now be read on them. What are you using to read them with, a calibre plugin?

Edit
Oh okay I just re-read what you said and realise that you're using [deleted] to change the format to epub then Calibre changing it to azw3.

Please remember that specifically naming DRM-removal tools is against MR's rules. It's fine to talk about DRM removal in the abstract, but specifics of tools must not be discussed.

One thing I noticed with the plug in for working with kepubs (that someone pointed me to) but which I won't id on the board so as to not risk violating the rules is that it even converts the sample books that you have saved in preview. So you have to be careful to keep things sorted. I just want to be able to access what I've bought so that doesn't bother me. Of course none of that stuff would be necessary if Kobo would just put the info. back up as to which file is kepub, as opposed to which is a straight epub, and which is accessed via an acsm file. The latter two of course usually show the difference once you have a book in your library but they really should id the kepub files better before you buy.

@crich - previews are DRM free kepubs in format.

Agreed - the best solution would simply be for Kobo to tell users what format a book is available in.

Maybe, but better an honest company that loses an occasional sale than one that is flooded with complaints from irate customers I'd think. Maybe one day they'll catch on to that. We can only hope.

The irate customers complaining on MobileRead were enough to keep me from being a Kobo customer!

Well, sure Kobo is screwing up. They're Kobo. It's what they do.

A while back I picked up a free book at Kobo. It's not the kind of book I usually read, but it was free on Kobo, and not free at Amazon. The book is Unnatural Relations, by Marilyn Campbell, and that's the way it shows up in my Kobo library. But the book that downloads to ADE is See How They Run, by Marilyn Campbell -- which does not appear to be available under that title at Kobo.

It was a free book and, as I said, I didn't have a burning desire for it, so I'm not worried about it. Right now I have a problem getting Kobo to download a book I paid for -- first, I'll solve that problem, then I'll worry about the other one.

Seriously, I've had enough problems with Kobo that I'll only buy a book from them if I have a good discount code. Surely they'd prefer that the discount code bring me in the "digital door" and then get me to buy books at full price. THAT won't happen until I'm reasonably sure they can run their business like a business.

This is interesting from The Digital Reader. Though the comments after the article and the discussion on this thread suggest the problem has not been resolved after all.

Quote:
It’s been just over a month since Kobo’s perennial problem with blocking downloads of purchased ebooks came to a head, and it looks like that problem has been resolved.

I was checking my Kobo account this morning and I noticed that virtually all of the ebooks could now be downloaded from the website and transferred to another app or device. Considering that this time last month about a third of the titles lacked a download option, that represents a major change.

In my library, two ebooks still have no download option. One is no longer available, and the other is a graphic novel which is probably in Kobo’s own proprietary format.

Frankly, with Barnes & Noble no longer supporting downloading/sideloading, Kobo's epub/kepub shenanigans, and Adobe's privacy invasions with ADE 4.0, I'm beginning to think it's time to switch to Kindle (which kills me as I much prefer epub).
