![]() I have a PW2 3G that is only 6 months old. I want hubby to have that as I can do with a wifi, he only has the PW1 so if I can get a H20 I'm happy with I can settle for a PW2 wifi. |

I normally have an anything-but-Kindle approach to readers/apps, but I must say that the Voyage's 6" 300dpi screen with page-turn 'buttons' almost had me interested. However, I know that 10minutes of having to put up with Amazon-knows-best about how text on screen should look would have had me spitting feathers. I see they're about to add that they also know best about light levels. I don't think nanny-Amazon is for me.

I just want a sharper screen than my current Aura, so that's either the H20 or the Voyage. (I don't want the HD) |

The light sensor can be disabled, just as it can on every other device that has such a facility. How about we actually wait and see how well it works, before deriding it?

I see what you're saying but I can't see how it can possibly work well for everyone as people have widely differing preferences in lighting levels.

No, as you say, it will be set to some average sort of sensitivity. My iPhone has auto brightness-setting which works absolutely fine for me, but I'm sure there are many people who disable it. The point is that it will work fine for many people, and those for whom it doesn't work can set the light level manually, just as they do at the moment. Nobody is any the worse off by the addition of such a facility. To refer to it as a "nanny" facility is just pure Amazon-bashing.

I've made no comment on how well it will work, it may be perfect. Hopefully it will be. Is it a feature Kindle users have been clamouring for? If so I haven't read about it. My comment reflects my personal opinion (I am allowed those, aren't I?). I know I could switch it off if I wanted. If I was a Kindle customer (which I freely admit I'm not) I think I might have wanted the available development time/money to be channeled into something a bit more interesting or time-saving.

I agree. I have the automatic light sensor on my iPad and it works great for me. If it doesn't work to someone's liking, it's easy enough to disable.

Since you ask, I am such a person and the answer for me is 'No'. Now I suggest we cease this unhelpful conversation.

Returning to the topic at hand: virtually every phone and LCD tablet has a light sensor to control the level of illumination. In my experience these work pretty well, and it's a natural extension to extend the facility to frontlit eInk devices. I suspect it's something we'll see on a lot more devices in the future. |
