I've read Tom Sayer and I did enjoy it. It's just sometimes the way it's written is the turn off.

Another +500 page book I thoroughly enjoyed was The Physician by Noah Gordon. Also the sequel Shaman, but The Physician was the better of the two. A great book.

"The Island of Second Sight" by Albert Vigoleis Thelen is a 1953 German book that recently came out in English translation and weighs in at 736 pages in paper. It is also available as an ebook.
It's a very amusing shaggy dog of a book set on Mallorca in the 1930s with some quite serious historical perspectives along the way.
