I move the book to a collection called "finished books" otherwise I don't know if I already "own" (read; license) the book and I might just purchase (read; license) it again.

I'm probably middle of the road. I have about 60-70 books on the kindle - mix of fiction and non- fiction so all my moods are covered. I usually move a series off once I finish it, but keep some old favourites all the time, in case I'm get stranded on an desert island.

I haven't kept a large number loaded, as I use the dictionary a lot, and don't want to slow the reader down with too many books. However, I've noticed it's much faster looking up words on my new kindle touch - so I may load a few more.

Mostly, I don't want to annoy Amazon, with too many books bought on discount from kobo, and transferred to the kindle. My way of keeping my head down

Good to know that it may be a non-issue.

Interesting discussion. I have most of my books, 150+ now, still on my kindle. I use a few folders to sort the ones I've read and from what source. Everything but Amazon stuff in in Calibre now and I'm wondering what would be the value of adding the Amazon material there too? If I did, what would I need to do, download each separately?

Just wondering.

Connect your Kindle and sync. Might take a while if you have lots and lots of books.

This!

I do remove the standalone books that I have read from my Kindle, but they're not "deleted", they're kept in my Calibre library.

Honestly, if I didn't have Calibre, I don't really know how I would manage my book reading, but Calibre makes the process pretty simple.
What she said - expect I use GREEN. And I keep all of the books in a series until I'm done with the entire series (just in case I have to refer to a previous book).

I have changed the way I sort books thanks to this thread. I have my TBR on my front page of Mantano and then sort them to genre when done. I just keep the "show books without collections" up.

Thanks for the ideas folks, I knew starting this thread would get me somewhere!

I never delete books. I travel a good bit, and love having my entire library with me at all times. There are several series by favorite authors that I re-read on a regular basis. And I frequently am reminded of passages or chapters of favorite books while reading new books, and love being able to switch over mid-stream and re-read the portion brought to mind.

I've got a 32GB microSD card; it's not like I'm going to run out of space.

Read, delete, read, delete and repeat!

I find it easier to choose what to read next if I don't have to stop and think 'did I read that one last year, or am I just imagining it'. But I'm not a re-reader, in the last two years I've re-read one book. If I was a re-reader I would probably keep my favourites on my reader.

I always delete a book after I've read it - things don't get cluttered that way, and I can easily access the ones I haven't read. As it is, I still have six pages of unread books to get through. (Currently I have a Kindle 3 and side-load my books; I'm not sure if organization is easier on other readers.)

If I want to re-read something, I can always put it on again. And I do sometimes flip through passages of my favorite books after I've read them - and, as a writer, study certain aspects of the style or structure - but that is one thing that still seems to work better for me with a paper copy.

The only books I delete are the ones I really didn't like/couldn't get into.

I like having an organized library with me wherever I go. I also give recommendations to people, and it helps to be able to go through my books and find out what I think they would like. I'm OCD, and I think my reader looks better aesthetically with a lot of books on it. It would bother me too much to delete them after I read, even if I kept a backup copy on my computer/external HD (which I do). It doesn't bother me to go through my list, because a lot of times I just swift through it real fast, or I run a search because I know what i'm looking for (before I read a book, I tend to look it up on goodreads .. I make my decision there).

I delete them from my reader as I finish them. However, the empty files remain unless I go in and manually delete them; this is often a lot of work, thus every so often I delete everything except what I'm currently reading, and do a re-load of a couple of dozen from Calibre (not necessarily the ones that had just been deleted).

I have about 200 books on my ereader since I bought it last year.
Once I've read a book I just leave it on there.
It's a Kobo touch and it doesn't seem to have any performance issues for having that many books on it.

I delete as I read. My first ebook reader can only hold about 200 books in its memory and I got into the habit of deleting read books to make space for new ones. I manage my epub books on an external hard drive and just send them back to my Reader if I want to re-read them.
