How many would like to have the Kindle with settings that give a look similar to the sample?

My DX looks like a combination of the #2and 3. The margins are wider and the spacing closer. Though not as tight as 1-2.

Personally 1-2 look to close and cramped almost like reading a nutjobs scribblings, if they were in a printed hand it would complete the illusion. Just too tight.

I cant recalll what my K2 looked like but aside from adjusting the text size Ive found no real desire to have to adjust anything. Maybe im missing something but all the talk of different fonts and sieloading them is something I never got or felt the need for and IMHO is probably the case for the majority of readers.

If Amazon got the level of feedback that MS got for removing the start button they would probably have changed it like MS is doing with W10. Because im sure the hacks and work arounds are detrimental to the system integrity in some ways.

Not saying thats the case with the Kindles but the number of people that really want sideloaded fonts and adjustable margins and line spacing are most likely a very small minority. Ive run into a lot of people with Kindles and aside from here I can honestly ssay its been a non issue.

I wish Amazon took the flushed-screen idea to the next level and made the bezel part of the screen. The actual screen content will still remain in the 6"-diagonal portion in the middle, but if the bezel was the same color as the screen background, then they set the content to zero-margins and use the bezel as the margin. They would just need a larger piece of e-ink film, keep the existing back plane, and enlarge the front-light coverage to include more of the bezel.

Now I could imagine people contacting amazon to complain about the size of the new margins, thinking content could be displayed there.

Why not make a real "paper" Kindle?

Use the size it is now, but cover the entire front with useable e-ink, allowing margins to be set down to 0.5 cm from the side.

I imagine because a 7.8 inch display would be very expensive

Also, where would they put the buttons that so many of us are excited about?

The PocketBook InkPad 840 has an 8" 1600x1200 display for 179 euros, which is about $226. My idea was for the underlying electronics to stay at 6", which should make it much cheaper. But if they did make it an edge-to-edge screen, they could allow users to set their own margins and if the margin is big enough, draw page-turn buttons there.

The buttons could be on the underside/back, flush with the housing, so the page won't turn if you put the reader down. Still, when squeezing the edge, you'd also squeeze the button on the back. Actually, those buttons could run the entire length of the back if need be

PocketBook Ultra, that I had an opportunity to test, has that kind of buttons.
The idea sounds great.
The reality is ... different. Almost impossible to use with a cover, unless said cover has huge holes in the back. Very difficult to use when holding the device in one hand. Believe me, I desperately wanted to like that feature ;-).

I'm still astonished that it is so much more expensive than the current Paperwhite. What about it is so much more costly to manufacture?

Higher resolution display, better materials in the body, pressure sensors and Amazons not unreasonable desire to make a profit.

Price is not decided by cost to make. They put the price that is optimal for Amazon.

I had completely resigned myself to passing on it, because my PW1 was doing the job and I couldn't justify the price to upgrade without a NEED. (And the fact that I hit the 2G cap and am constantly struggling to make space didn't count - I keep a lot of cookbooks on my device and they can eat up storage like nothing else, plus I like to keep read books around 'just in case')

And then a weird miracle happened. The screen of my PW started leaking light in a really strange way - it didn't make it unworkable but distracting enough that I was annoyed and ready to replace. I contact Amazon CS just to see what they'd do (it was out of warranty but less than 2 years old and I was hoping they'd offer me a small credit for an upgrade).

They said they hadn't ever heard of my situation happening before and that they were sorry, but the only thing they could offer was ... a complete refund of my original purchase price!

So now I have the Voyage pre-ordered (although the wait on that has moved into late november!) and will just be using a backup kobo in the meantime. But I never thought I'd be so happy to have my kindle malfuction! (And when the light first started, I was VERY upset because it was the same week my hot water heater broke!)

Anyway, Amazon's customer service is one reason I can't imagine not having a Kindle. This was above and beyond - but they've always been very decent about Kindle problems in the past.

(Compare that with TWO broken Cybooks - does anybody else remember those? - that I basically completely threw away hundreds of dollars on)

Wait... a PW1, after the announcement of the Voyage? Like a 2 yr old device that is WAY out of warranty?

That's amazing rixte. I had a similar situation back in May, I had a 3G KK that I had two months Warrenty left on (I bought a three year policy) and I ended up with a replacement of a 3G PW2. That's why I am happy to pay the premium for the Voyage as I want to pass DH my 3G PW2, because I didn't pay for it so I feel like I am getting two devices for the price of one.
