I just added this note to the top messages in the pastebin:

Note: ".md5" files are small text files that contain an MD5 signature used to verify the matching ".bin" file.

I hope that helps eliminate any potential confusion.

Thanks to all who worked for this development. Loved it.

I have run to a bit issue. When I jailbreak the KV, it goes back to firmware 5.5 and to get Bookerly font, I updated it to 5.6.5. I still had the jailbreak (I could use KUAL) but I have lost ability to install the '*.bin' packages.
Usually I just pasted them and ejected my KV. Then in settings menu I could do 'Update Your Kindle'. But now its all grayed out.

I can add KUAL extensions by pasting them to the extensions folder alongside the documents folder, but nothing I can do about the '*.bin' file.

Any and all help welcome.

If you're coming straight from the 5.6.5 JB or the Factory Downgrade threads and you completely skipped the first post of *this* thread, be aware that on FW >= 5.5.x (i.e., you), using MRPI is REQUIRED to install every other custom packages!

Hello,

I just wanted to say that this downgrade method worked on my Kindle Paperwhite 3.
I followed it step by step except the special offers part which I didn't turn off prior to downgrade.

This is the combination I had success with:

- just got it so there was no notes etc., also I never used cloud just local storage and I did factory reset prior to downgrade
- Kindle was registered
- no passcode
- version G090G1
- went from 5.8.1 -> 5.7.4
- special offers were turned on and still are

I have one question though. Can I disable special offers through amazon support now that kindle is jailbroken? Can something go wrong if I do it this way? Is it safer just to rename the assets folder?

You must change the special offers through Amazon.
You can do it now or do it later.

It is not safe to rename the 'assets folder'.

Thank you, I removed special offers through customer service. Everything went smoothly.

So the result is jailbroken PW3 updated to 5.8.1 with special offers turned off

Yes.

The 6th, 7th, and 8th generation devices listed in the title, running any known firmware version.

Firmware version 5.8.1 is very well known.
