Noticed a typo with 3.16.0 (mark 4 sideloaded on my H2O) in the Italian translation today. When the popup with the WIFI networks opens, the writing next to the toggle is "WiFi: abilitado" (if enabled) and "WiFi: disabilitado" (if disabled). Instead, it should be "WiFi: abilitato" and "WiFi: disabilitato".

I hope KOBO solves this bug as soon as possible.
Apparently it is a bug in Qt. It should be fixed in the next firmware release.

So, how do you get a PDF downloaded from Kobobooks directly to the device?
Quote:
On external SD:No
Steps to reproduce:
  1. Tap a PDF to open (50 to 100MB), and wait, and wait, and wait....
  2. zoom in out, scroll around & turn pages
Current result: Very, very, slow opening, turning pages, and zooming
Workaround: Install Firmware 3.2.0 or lower.
I'm sorry, but "and wait, and wait, and wait...." is not a bug report. That just says you thought it took to long. It might just be that you are less patient than other users. If this is a reproducible problem, time it and report that. That helps the rest of us work out whether we see it or not.

As a test, I tried a 136MB PDF on my Glo running 3.16.0 and my son's Glo running 3.15.0. On both, opening the PDF takes less than 5 seconds. There is some variation depending on the page the book is being opened to. It is pictures and a description on alternating pages. Opening to the description page is noticeably quicker than the picture. The same goes for page turns. It's not fast, but it isn't interminably slow.

The next size down I have is 21MB. This is graphics heavy manual for my TV. Again, it isn't fast, but, nothing is taking three seconds on either firmware.

From here, there doesn't seem to be an issue. Yes, bigger PDFs take more time than smaller, but, that is to be expected. So, maybe it is something different in the books we are testing. Higher resolution images would be an obvious cause, but DRM might have an affect, or complicated text layout. Is there anything different about your books?

The PDF with the faded smear is at https://www.sans.org/reading-room/wh...language-35937 which is all but unreadable on the kobo.

Looking at it again, there may be no easy fix for this, and my test images dithered nicely on the kobo screen, and looked even better after calibre processed them with default settings.

I cannot understand why so many people are eager to read PDFs on eink devices, since PDFs have a completely different definition and purpose.
Even a cheap chinese tablet can do better and it won't cost more than an eink reader.

It's a shame that you decided to take umbrage at David's reply and drop your message. All he was doing was describing his experience just as you described yours.

I know that. I wasn't mad or anything I just felt like I was reporting a problem that no one else was having..so it must be just the large pdfs (PC Gamer) I was trying..its really not that important to me, I kinda posted it out of boredom to see if anyone else was having the problem. As Maida pointed out, PDF on eink isn't that great so I deleted it and moved on.

That's silly. Try "I cannot understand why so many people distribute documents as PDFs instead of text files or epubs". FTFY, HTH.

> Even a cheap chinese tablet can do better and it won't cost more than an eink reader.

I have a cheap chinese tablet, and I do read pdfs on it. But not outside, or for more than a few hours without charging. If I want to read pdfs outside, or read them for 20 hours without charging, I use my kobo. Or sometimes I just don't want to carry two devices, or hold up double the weight of the kobo in a single device.

I do not understand why people with no imagination criticize what others do. :-P

freekobo, you're not the only one to notice poor pdf performance post version 3.2. Here's my best post from the thread I started to discuss it. If you would care to download the pdf tested and confirm my findings, that would be one more voice on the issue.

I can confirm your findings with your example PDF. That's exactly what's happening to me too. It also happens using this pc gamer magazine PDF. Pinch zoom is slow and sometimes my screen goes all black or blank. Using 3.16.0 now, same thing. Its weird that performance is much better on 3.2.0 with the same PDFs.

If nothing changes, restore the backup.

If you know how to do, you can try to dump the db and import it in a new db (backup it before anyway)
HI,
This is my 2nd kobo. my first was stolen at school. I have a touch ereader now but can't get any files to be "seen" on my device. the calibre device shows I have them on the device, I can see them on explorer (windows 7) but can't see any books when I unplug from the pc.
Additionally, I followed the above steps and get stuck when after hitting copy for the file, I can't paste the file to my desktop.
this is a new device and the only thing I can see on it is the free book my dad helped me d/l

The copy of the database to the PC should work. When something like that doesn't work, it usually means either there isn't any space, or you don't have permission to write to the destination. If either of these were the cause, it would mean you have bigger problems with your PC than the ereader. If you are copying to the Windows desktop, that isn't a good idea. It is better to put data files somewhere else. The documents folder or another folder would be best.

Having said that, as this is a new device, I wouldn't worry about backing up the database first. The symptoms suggest the database is corrupt. That will prevent new books added to the device from being loaded. The simplest fix is to do a sign out on the device. The device will remove the database, restart and prompt you to set up again. It should then load the books.

If that doesn't work, do a factory reset. The option for this is on the "Device information" page of the settings. That will wipe the device completely, reinstall the factory firmware and then take you through the setup again. This fixes just about any problem, but it does mean you have to load the books again.
