Why keep a thread on topic? Ok.... So people can post questions about what kindle they should buy, whether a colorsoft is worth it, post pics of their favorite covers, complain about the cost of ebooks, everything?

If you don't understand why a thread should stay on topic, I don't think I can explain it to you.

In my time as a MobileRead member, thread drift has been a constant once a thread has fulfilled it's basic purpose, in this case, discussing Amazon's abandonment of their earlier devices. After all, you can only list the devices that Amazon has abandoned and what they can still do after the event so often before boredom sets in.

Since this thread pretty much mirrors the Amazon dropping support for more Kindles thread in the News forum, it has even less reason for sticking with the original topic.

Your post here is number 616 in this thread. And the other thread on Amazon discontinuing support on devices has 321 posts at this point. We're pushing a thousand posts on the subject.

It's amazing this thread is still active, let along on topic.

There are always a few threads on every internet forum that seem to have infinite life. They just keep going, and going, and going. They twist and turn through different topics. For years and years. This thread may well be on its way to joining that elite group of threads. Lord knows, there's nothing left to discuss on the original topic at this point.

If threads could somehow magically be kept strictly on target on every forum, there wouldn't be many forum members who would survive (or more accurately, "would care to survive") that level of moderator control. Forums would die off. Threads would not be interesting. And the remaining posters would be the most boring of the boring.

Should we try to keep threads somewhat on topic? Yes. Should that be strictly enforced? No. Not unless the intent is to kill the forum. A joke thrown in here and there, a personal story thrown in - that kind of stuff on an intermittent basis in threads helps a forum survive. Also, many threads start of with the "XY Problem" and inevitably stray "off topic" because the thread was started poorly in the first place. "XY Problem" is when people ask how to implement their planned solution to a problem, rather than asking how to solve the problem. Often their proposed solution that they want to implement is the wrong solution, thus the thread drifts "off topic" as responders start suggesting different solutions rather than providing guidance on how to implement the initial wrong solution that was presented.

You're talking off-topic here. Talking about any Kindle that has not been discontinued is off-topic.

The thread has mostly run it's course. So talking about what to do to replace the older Kindles so we can remove DRM is the next local step. Yes, talking about what Kindle to buy to allow DRM removal and what works and what doesn't is also part of the next step in this thread.

Favorite covers, cost of eBooks, new Kindle with MFT, are all really off-topic.

However, because this thread has mostly run it's course on the original topic, it's progressing rather well from there. Most of us in this thread have these older Kindles so we could use them to download eBooks from Amazon and the remove the DRM. Talking about how to remove the DRM on some of the older but not discontinued Kindles is the next step.

Logically, to me, it should be in a separate dedicated thread. Why would someone with those older-not-discontinued-Kindles think to scroll through pages and pages to find these next step posts?

And I don't think this thread has run its course, I'm guessing. I'll guess that we will start to get more posts about not being able to sync personal docs/send to kindle.

I still can sync personal docs using Send to Kindle, removing a book from my Amazon content page removes it from my Kindle and instead of the endless queued message, I get an Unavailable for Download popup trying to download an Amazon purchased ebook. I can't remove the device from my Amazon account which will be a pain unless Amazon automatically removes it after a waiting period.

At this time, I'd guess that pretty much all she wrote.

People, please! The possessive form of "it" is "its". No apostrophe! My eyes are bleeding.

I was able to remove the kindle touch from my account from within the device. I don't know if it will work from other devices. I found the solution on Google AI.

Today I had to contact CS to deregister mine. The screen had some dead spots, one of these being the menu button for settings, so I couldn't deregister from there.
