Did I get new glasses? Everything is so crisp, clear, fast. The boxes look different somehow. Wow! Just looked at latest and greatest. I noticed years ago all bookish Europeans tend to tilt their heads to the left while Americans tilt their heads to the right. I guess it's due to how spines are printed.

That is the most ridiculous thing I ever seen.

A repo that does absolutely nothing but trash calibre reputation, while alluring a whopping 283 admirers. (stargazers...)

Lots of folks don't want something better than calibre. They want something simpler, with only a few basic features and a sleek, modern UI (the latter being the most important ).

For me nothing can replace calibre.

For me, I'd rather more functional then pretty. calibre does everything I want. This other program does not yet support Kobo and when it does, I doubt it will support Kobo as well as calibre.

True, but not necessarily for the slicker UI.

I help coordinate reading group of 25±5 at my local public library. Over the past couple of months three members (mac users) have moved from calibre to Octary - it has a migration feature. The clincher wasn't Octary's glitz and glamour, it was support for multi-level series and universes. Given how often that issue is raised here perhaps it should be 'the why' for calibre 10.

Now that there's a Windows version more will undoubtedly follow, and more still when it provides support for Kobo and Pocketbook e-readers. Thirteen members of the reading group have used calibre at some time (about half), it's now seven (about a third). My guess is that it will be down to two by the end of the year… me and the Linux user.

Don't know whether it means anything, the number of active calibre installs used to be north of 3.1M, its now south of 2.9M ==>> https://calibre-ebook.com/dynamic/calibre-usage.

Hmm... support for multilevel series is certainly something that would be nice to see in calibre, and yes, it's been raised here several times.

The highest number of complaints on other forums seem to be about UI, though, at least from what I've seen. Followed by its rigid file management system.

Never understood what's wrong with the calibre UI myself, but then I'm not a person with a particularly modern outlook or tastes.

Just curious... I understand that calibre now scans each book in your library and calculates the page count automatically the first time you open calibre 9.x. Is there an option to disable the scan? Since I'm not interested in a book's page count and I won't be using the bookshelf view, it seems pointless to count the number of pages for each book in my library.

It's not a huge problem, just a nice to have.

There is no way to disable that page count scan as far as I know. OTOH, on my main library, it counted close to 1700 books per minute when I first installed the calibre 8.99 beta and that was a background task for the 11 minutes it lasted. Since that first time, the delay when adding a new book is negligible.

What's a multi-level series? And calibre usage numbers have been 2.8-2.9 M for many many years. They spiked briefly above 3M during the amazon download and transfer via USB removal incident.
