I've had seven handheld devices that I've used for reading over the past 22 years.

1. Casio E-115 (summer 2000 - spring 2006). This was an early Pocket PC running Windows CE 3.0 and supported .LIT files via MS Reader. I used it extensively.
2. HTC Wizard (autumn 2006 - winter 2011). This was a phone / Pocket PC crossover running Windows Mobile 5. I read books in Plucker format using a program called Vade Mecum (and .LIT files).
3. Sony PRS-505 (Christmas 2008 - January 2013). My first e-ink device. This model had ten buttons down the side, plus page turn buttons. I gave it to a friend, who still uses it.
4. Kobo Mini (Christmas 2012 - January 2022). Sit tibi terra levis.
5. Kobo Aura HD (May 2013, still going strong).
6. Kobo Aura One (September 2016). This remains my main e-reader, and I don't expect to upgrade unless it dies.
7. Onyx Boox Max 2 (March 2018). Used primarily for academic work.

I added one more, I installed a Sage on Thursday.

The cover design is great! (But I have to take it off if I want to access the power button.)

Not many.

1 - 2008: CyBook Gen3
2 - 2011: Kindle Touch
3 - 2012: Kindle Paperwhite
4 - 2016: Kobo Aura ONE

I sold the Cybook within half a year because none of the books I wanted to buy were available at the time. In 2011 the Touch came out, which made using an e-reader much easier, Calibre had matured more than enough to use, and many books were available now, so I got back into e-reading. The only thing I wanted was a lit screen; so next year, I sold my Touch and bought a Paperwhite. I bought the Aura ONE for the bigger screen. I use this e-reader to this day.

I still have the Paperwhite as a backup. I sideload books onto it if I go somewhere where I don't want to take the Aura. One thing it has going for it is that its battery can be replaced. (Maybe I should do so.)

I've been using a kindle for a long time, but now I'm tired of the same old kindle and want a change of pace. So I purchased a kobo.

Sometimes I wonder if people take "return on investment" into account when getting a new e-reader. I don't read a huge amount of books (on average between 30 and 50 books a year, depending on how many pages they have and how busy I am with other things).

I have the KA1 since almost day one, but it sat on a shelf for the first half a year, waiting for the bugs to get ironed out and actually make it usable, so I effectively started using it around April 2017.

That means the KA1 is in use for about 5 years and because I've been busy the last few years with moving and work, I read less books than normal. I read only about 120 books on the KA1. At €289 when I bought it, that means each book cost me €2.40 on top of the price of the book itself to read.

That's an expensive way of reading; I couldn't begin to justify replacing my e-reader every other year, as I almost always go for top of the line stuff with hardware... and if I like it, I keep it a _long_ time. Often close or just over 8 years actually.

Not really, but I've managed to sell three of my older ereaders for 100-130€ and two for 50€.
I've sold 3 Kindles, a Nook and a Kobo. And gave my Oasis 2 to my niece.
I'll probably sell my Oasis 3 as well, but not just yet.

But no, I don't take this into account when buying a new reader. And I don't take the price of ebooks or the ereader into account either, because I no longer want to read paper books.

I just want the best reading experience I can get, no matter the price.

Yeah, I currently have three readers I bounce between. Each does one thing I like:
  • Nook Simple Touch Glowlight: Has buttons (and an SD card that I have loaded up)
  • Nook Glowlight Plus (2015): Waterproof
  • Kobo Clara HD: Amber light for night reading
I could buy a Libra 2 that does all of these things. But I feel like it is a waste when that would leave three perfectly good readers sitting in a drawer.

Not particularly, no, but the price of a new ereader plus a public library card plus a few bought ebooks is nothing in comparison to the price of 200 new paper books a year (not to mention the inconvenience, COVID exposure, or shipping costs of acquiring those).

My reading - including the bought ebooks as well as the borrowed ones - is the most cost-effective form of entertainment and enlightenment I can imagine.

I’m up to about fifteen plus by now. Three Sony’s, almost every kindle released up to the Oasis 3, and six Kobo’s. My all time favourite e-reader is the Kobo Forma.

For the record, I am sticking my fingers in my ears and going "La-la-la-la-la" until this thread returns to a sensible topic that my wife won't see over my shoulder. I am familiar with the question, "Why do you need another ereader?"

Because you're a tester and product specialist, that's why. Kobo should GIVE you their e-readers as far as I'm concerned.

This had been kind of my mindset ever since I got my first e-reader about a decade ago. If I were to buy a new one, I'd need to be able to sell the older one to recoup part of the cost of the new one. It's not so much that I need to read a certain number of books for the ROI to kick in.

All that went out the window this year, though. Lol. Bought the Libra 2 on sale about a month ago but I haven't planned on selling my H2O yet. So now I just take photos of them together with my cat for giggles.
