While I do think Amazon could be trying to phase out downloading, I don't think the aeroplane mode users make up the majority of Kindle owners. I think they're just a fraction of the population. Small enough for Amazon to do away with downloads.

I also don't think Amazon will totally take out USB transfer/drag-and-drop function to Kindles. Even Apple isn't that dumb. They might just push Kindle for PC to users tho, just like iTunes.

But that's just me putting my conspiracy theory hat on.

Overall, this won't affect me because I have learned to never purchase anything from a closed off ecosystem. Amazon might not be there yet, but they're close enough. As amazing as Kindles are, they are sometimes a total nightmare to work with. The moment whispersync for documents is gone, I'm gone too.

If Amazon lock themselves totally into a "walled garden" system, no new ereader purchaser will be tempted to buy a kindle.

The battery in my PW3 is looking dodgy. When it's time for a new ereader, I'll probably be looking at a Kobo, unless this whole fiasco turns out to be a glitch.

I just tried to download a free book. The same happened as described in post 37. I went to Content and Devices and was able to download using transfer via usb.

If Kobo would implement some type of whispersync, I'd totally jump ship. They're double the msrp here and totally a pain to import. But I would gladly save up the cash to get one

Until then, I'll be a slave to whispersync.

I'm using 1.17, but it should be possible to disable the KFX support for later versions, as detailed here (method 2A):

Sampes from My content and devices are show same message.
Bought books and KU books are downloadable from My content and devices.
UI on books pages only allows to send to library.
eInk Kindles are permanently offline (and wasn't charged for years)(I use Calibre + CC/Moon+ Bookfusion).
If downloads stopped working - I guess I will either have to find version of Kindle for PC which work with Calibre or have not use amazon for this(pity, 24month sub was recently renewed).

I just bought 4 books by a favorite author, somewhat ironically, one I discovered when I first switched to Kobo. Most of her work is on Smashwords and Kobo too, but This series is only available at Amazon, although it's not KU (afaik). For all four books, this was how the purchase process went:

I had o go into Manage my Content and Devices , happily I was able to download them to my PC, but this was the first time I've experienced having my preferred selection overridden. It feels like a precursor, to me.

As a VERY occasional Amazon shopper, this was my first experience of it. I totally agree that is ominous, and must now hope that the few authors I read who are Kindle-only will change that status.
