The thing to do is if you have more then one computer, keep 1.17 on one of them and the other can have a newer version to play around with.

1.17 will also auto-update unless you immediately go to settings and tell it not to.

Do the later versions ignore the request to not auto-update?

Sort of. I have 1.24 autoupdate twice (once to 1.28 and once to 1.29). Before the 1.28 update, I got asked if I wanted to update to 1.25. I uninstalled and reverted back to 1.24 on the 1.28 update, on the 1.29 update, I used a workaround to keep 1.29 from downloading KFX format.

Seems just sticking to 1.17 is best for anyone that downloads their books to back them up with Alf. Why ever install anything else?

I have seen it in a B&N store and I have held it and I was glad to put it down.

Aside from size, my Clara is an excellent replacement for my KA1. It’s snappier when typing notes, and I annotate a lot. I liked how red the ambient light could get vs the Clara, but having had three different KA1s in my home, that ambient light color varied from unit to unit.

I was forced to upgrade. My KA1s had display and USB issues after they were a few years old. If your KA1 is working fine, I wouldn’t bother upgrading if you like the larger format.

There are books that are only available in KFX format (some due to language, some due to publisher DRM requirements, some for unknown reasons). Using 1.29 gives me the ability to handle that small number of books while maintaining non-KFX downloads for books I want to import to calibre.

Actually no. The Kobo Aura ONE screen turned red, at the extreme. Much darker than the Clara or the Glowlight 3.

I don't know why Kobo wimped out on the power of the amber lights. But the Aura suffered from problems where parts of the screen would turn green. I don't know, but maybe that's why they backed off?

That's a fair assessment. I had two? different KA1s. I loved how dark they got. Definitely darker than my Clara, but the coloring was inconsistent between models. Mine would definitely be green on one side. It seems we've traded the ability for low lumination for coloring consistency. Considering how much grief Kobo got online for that KA1 coloring inconsistency, they prioritized the wiser option.
