it seems to me to be a good optionally feature to have for those who want it, if it's good enough for a tablet and mobile phone etc then why not an e-reader as well.

Most people don't have a problem with the fact that some people want a PIN. However, many have pointed out that some of the reasons provided as to why they want it are flat out wrong and are misleading to others who may read it. And also people are pointing out the reasons why it is has not likely a priority (since they appear to have started to play with it) for Kobo to spend the money (developer time, support etc) to include it. There are lots of things I might like included, but if it's only me and 100 other people want it, that's not enough for them to spend a lot of time on it.

And the vast majority of people have WAY more personal/identifiable/nefariously usable information on their phone and/or tablet than their ereader so it is a high priority item for MOST (not just a few) people on phones/tablets.

I don't think most people in this thread are saying it wouldn't be a good thing. They're pointing out some of the FUD in some of the posts which make it seem like much more info in vulnerable than it is.

As I posted earlier in the newest firmware there is a PIN option when the Kobo has a certain affiliate set so it would appear they are at least toying with giving folks the option since it's in the firmware.

ok good let's hope they do, it might stop some people buying a Kindle instead.

Why is it so difficult for some people to grasp the concept that other people don't believe a particular feature is important and would prefer other things to be done first.

And just to be clear as to what MY opinion is:

Yes, there is a security issue. Yes, it should be fixed. But, I don't believe it is a very bad problem. I can think of lots of things I'd prefer Kobo to spend their development time on.

yes it should be fixed, why is it so difficult to give the customer the option and then they can decide for themselves if they want to use it or not, that way everyone is happy and more importantly catered for.

and perhaps less spillage to Kindle.

best wishes koboy

It seems Kobo already has a pin in the firmware. They just need to enable it for any affiliate.

To repeat your phrase:

Why is it so difficult for some people to grasp the concept that it takes money and time to develop features for any product. Money and time that might be better spent elsewhere. Or not at all.

And of course, you have informed Kobo about how important this function is to you? If you and the other people who need it haven't told them, Kobo won't put as much priority on it as features that have been requested of them.

Koboy, change your affiliate to Rakuten and you can set a pin. But, you'll need to side load new firmware updates.

I don't find the security issue to be significant, but I did try the PIN. It looks like a nice implementation that would satisfy many of the concerns expressed on this thread. I will likely use it only when I travel, since my e-reader is usually an in-door e-reader.

I did leave my Aura on a plane last year. I was reading a history of a well-known research team, not racy, but I admit I blushed a little when I thought of someone opening the sleep cover and seeing the title Masters of Sex.

Personally I was more concerned about the Aura than account security, and about the trip I was taking a few days later without an e-reader. I survived, the account was safe and the e-reader was returned (yea United Airlines!)
