There's no way to root the device without downgrading, then? Can't SSH in, wipe firmware, start over?
Currently, the only way to "root the device" as you write it is to install firmware that is not suppose to exist out side of factory testing.
Amazon/Lab126 has prevented that from happening, starting with 5.8.8
True, the version number is earlier, which makes the term "downgrade" appropriate -
BUT
It is not the change in version number that is significant, it is the change from a consumer to a factory only firmware build that is significant.

SSH was removed from the Kindle's consumer image back in the K4 days.

These e-ink Kindles do not run Android nor are they organized as Android is -
There is no "back up copy" of the system firmware present.
If you "wipe everything", (there is a button for that: "erase all") then everything is gone.
Then you are in a world of hurt, far worse than anything else could do to you, except perhaps toasting it in the fireplace.

Another user reporting this problem converts books using calibre. Perhaps calibre produces azw3 files that are subtly incompatible with recent kindle firmware. I have never experienced this problem, but I use kindlegen for conversion. Or that could just be a coincidence.

The kindle firmware is pretty good about reporting internal problems. I suggest that someone who does experience this problem use the ";dm" search command to dump the kindle's log files whenever it occurs. The the ends of these logs should be checked to see if there is a common error message that could point to the cause of the problem.

I edit my books to adjust formatting before using Send-to-Kindle, and I'm wondering if this has something to do with it.

It happens with every book I've read for months, but with some books it happens more frequently than others.
I have some that are straight from Amazon, some that are sent to the Kindle cloud from Calibre by email, some that are sideloaded over USB. As I said, I haven't been able to reproduce this in any book.

Hmmm...odamizu, are you on a Mac? It looks like the other user is. Maybe that's the issue?

The "problem" happens to me irregularly. For what it's worth, everything on my reader got there via Calibre, and I'm on a Mac.

I haven't used Calibre for a while. Everything I've read in the past several months has been hand-edited via an HTML editor; validated and zipped into an epub using Pagina EPUB-Checker; run through KindleGen via Terminal command on Mac; then Send-to-Kindle via Send-to-Kindle app on Mac or iOS. If you think any of those steps could be suspect, let me know and I'll see if I can figure out an alternative to test.

Cool. Thanks for the tip. I will try that.

Is there a list somewhere of these ";" commands that can be used? I remember there was one to reset the "time-left-reading" feature. What other nifty commands am I missing? :)

I am indeed on a Mac, which is an interesting coincidence. But I'm not sure what about the Mac would cause this.

KindleGen on Mac should be the same as KindleGen on PC.

Could the Send-to-Kindle app for Mac be wonky? Hmmm ... maybe I'll try sending it via email to my Kindle's address and see if that makes a difference ...

Most of them are unchanged from what is described in the wiki.

So this is kind of interesting. I took the same book I was reading via Send-to-Kindle app and sent it to my Kindle email address.

As I was reading the second copy, the missing text bug recurred 3 times in less than half an hour, which is unusual. I doubt it had anything to do with the method of delivery (Send-to-Kindle app vs Kindle email address), but it made me wonder if the bug has something to do with memory or caching, since the book was newly downloaded and probably still being indexed.

I did ;dm to dump the logs all 3 times. I must admit I don't really know what I'm looking at. There are also 4 logs for each dump: all_netlog_logs, all_system_logs, all_wpa_supplicant_logs, and wininfo_logs.

What should I look for???

Also, I feel like the missing text problem is worse in 5.8.8 — or maybe it's just worse in the book I'm currently reading.

Could the file size of each chapter make a difference? This book has longer chapters than the book I was previously reading — e.g., 45K vs 20K.

Thoughts???

The all_systems_logs file is the one most likely to be useful. Try looking for errors somewhere within the last hundred or so lines of the end of the file.

Most messages are formatted as: date:time process[pid]: severity message
where severity is I (info), W (warning), E (error)
For example:

Quote:
