Reading a teaser just for the chapter you're about to start isn't too bad, especially in those books that were originally serialized potboilers. Seeing all of the teasers for the book pretty much tells you the whole story, removing most of the suspense. Since there are only so many stories to tell, it's not hard to fill in the holes. With a paper book, it's easy to skip past the table of contents. With NCX navigation, I just don't press the menu button and I'm safe. But if I have to page over the table of contents, I'm in danger of finding out the whole story before I start reading. I'm generally a slow reader, but I'm inexplicably a speed-reader when I see a page with stuff I don't want to read yet. Anyway, I don't expect to change anyone's mind on this; I just wanted to vent about it. Damn you, Amazon! Damn you all to hell!
When I don't want to page through a table of contents I simply click on the first link to bypass the rest of the table of contents. The occasional table of contents with 50 odd chapter links and no chapter headings are just too boring to page through.

It's not just ereaders. I'm evaluating a new software package and on one of the screens it only displays about 20 characters of a each line of a tree then a ..., regardless of how much space is available.

I heart ... - it saves me from writing more stuff than I feel like writing.

Mhh, strange, on every book I read I have to go out of my way to see the TOC. Whether that be in the front or in the back. Usually it is in the front. My Kindle has this awesome feature to open up a book at the beginning skipping right over all the front matter.

The cover (image) is to get you to BUY!
If the book is on your K, you OWN. So who needs a cover in your face at that point.

To paraphrase a US TV commercial of past years: "Show Me the TEXT"

It's one reason I really don't like the kindle software. I like to start with the cover, move on to the TOC and then start reading. Who is Bozos that he thinks he knows best for me?
