B&N didn't stop Fictionwise from using micropay rebates or offering discount coupon sales; agency did. B&N didn't buy Diesel or BoB. Yet Agency crippled and eventually killed them, too.
Fixed pricing may "protect" outlets in countries where price fixing is mandated but in the US the culture is different: discounting is *expected* and is not considered "going evil". if price fixing is so good for B&M retailers, why don't the multinationals apply Agency to pbooks to reduce the power of Costco, Walmart, and B&N so the tiny mom and pop stores can survive 500 years? Obviously because they *know* the public won't go along with the higher, no discount prices. And they are now belatedly discovering that big chunks of the market aren't going along with the new rules on ebooks. Different continent, different culture. What works in one land does not necessarily work everywhere. What is necessary in one place, price fixing, can easily be seen as unnecessary and evil in an entirely different business environment. Which is why in business it is up to consumers to decide what *they* think is "evil". ("Evil" is in the eye of the consumer, not competitors, or pundits, or moralists.) Amazon--because it puts consumers above all else--is Golden and no amount of rants and one-sided exposes by big media has touched them. The customer sees no evil in that company. ![]() Last edited by fjtorres; 09-21-2015 at 08:27 AM. |

Last week, it was a tortilla press, tortilla warmer and 2 sets of measuring cups & spoons. (The nice set that has 10 cups and 9 spoons.) To the one that asked a c note is $100. No new devices right now since I have been upgrading my kitchen stuff. |

And why do you think the publishers have succeeded in reinstating agency? What happenned to prevent a repeat of the Macmillan book pulling or the Hachette dispute? Looks to me like what you call rants did touch them. What about the New York Times article on callous treatment of employees who are ill or experiencing extreme family crises? It's too soon to be sure, but I'm both hoping and expecting that Amazon has indeed, once again, been touched, and in a good way. Compared to old-fashioned strong labor unions, and the mid-twentieth century small-business protective anti-trust approach, the touch provided by media exposes is on the weak side. But it ain't nothing either. |

Sorry but they knew they were going to sign new contracts. So the disputes were nothing but media hype. |

The Macmillan book pulling and Hatchette dispute have not been repeated or duplicated for the simple reason that Amazon has been able to come to an amicable agreement in other cases.
Surely that was obvious? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I have heard of Amazon not allowing returns on some accounts. One woman admitted to returning 75% of her purchases.

I'm just a tad perturbed at Amazon tonight. My upset is all around their ebooks, of which I have over 6K since 2012. Problem is lately a few of the oldest ones I downloaded to Calibre years ago but past by reading until recently have disappeared from my on-line kindle cloud. I side-loaded them via Calibre Companion and upon trying to open in Kindle get the message to "Remove from device and download a new copy." Question is why in tarnation and how are they checking out what I read. Now they are AZW not AZW3 and are no longer available in the book store. I did find my order at Amazon though. I suggest if one has the means to convert Amazon formats to something they cannot get their hands on.
On a happier note.... I don't get out much anymore and my wife can't up and visit stores very often, so we buy stuff a lot through Amazon. Don't return a lot but they have been very good about it. Have to laugh at my fat fingers though, as a couple times a month I'll get fired up about a book and click on "Single Click" thinking it's the Kindle Unlimited. I always catch it in a couple minutes and they always quickly refund it. They're not all bad if you can keep them away from YOUR books. |
