I agree. I use them all the time. They are especially useful when paging through the list of books on the device. No more accidentally opening a book!

I have to agree with Meera. You have to decide if you want to read novels or comics because ereaders simply don't do comics well. On the plus side, you don't have to register your device. It will ask you the first time to hook up to wifi. Just click cancel, turn the wifi off and you are good to go with sideloading.
I have a kindle keyboard whose wifi causes failure. I reset to factory settings and turned of the wifi and have been using it without a problem since. I hear you can do the same thing with a Kindle Fire HDX, but a lot of function is limited. Perhaps your best bet is to get a Samsung - not ideal for reading like an ereader, but you can read from it and do comics too. |

GET A COVER! Can be any kind of cover, as long as it is sturdy.
This is what I would emphasize, being one (of the many) who managed to break their brand-new e-reader by doing something that would be absolutely fine with any other electronic device, e.g. tablet, phone, gameboy etc. In my case it was simply putting the reader (Kindle Keyboard) into my bag together with tablet and phone, while in a protective sleeve ... that was unfortunately not tough enough. I did not throw, drop, maul, mutilate or anyhow other mistreat my bag, but when I took out the Kindle half an hour later, the screen was cracked (most likely it got slightly bent) and it was thus unusable. I must here, however, commend Amazon for sending me a new one free of charge, as this happens often with e-readers and Amazon (and most likely also B&N) want you to keep buying their content, so they normally are quite nice even though you might have broken the reader yourself. (But of course ... better do not break it in the first place) Best regards, Andy |

If you are just planning to load free books or books you already have on an ereader you don't really need an internet connection. I have a Kobo Touch which is about 3 years old; you have to register with them but I have never bought a book from them. You can load books from your computer. I also have an Aluratek which is quite cheap, but I am not sure if they even make them anymore.
For reading comics you are probably better off with a tablet. Of course you can read E books on a tablet too, but eInk is better for reading text I think. |

And tablets like the Kindle Fire use gorilla glass which is scratch and damage resistant. It's made by the same people who make corning ware I understand.
