@Josieb1

Here are a couple of photos of my H2O taken under normal (incandescent light) with screen light at 0% and 30%. My screen looks very dark in artificial light but on a sunny day it is good, although I usually have the light on to make it even lighter.

Last year when I first saw my sister's HD I didn't like the yellowish light but preferred the more blue light of my 6" Aura. This year when I looked again, I preferred her HD, although I can't be certain whether it is my preferences that have changed or her light is not so yellow as it was. As others have said, it does depend on whether you prefer the yellow or blue tinge to the light.

Thanks for the pictures Lyn

My H20 darker at the top than the bottom, I've posted a picture in the First Impressions thread, so it's going back today as faulty.

I wanted to pass on something I found out this morning. The reason Argos are so reluctant to allow returns is that its a data capture device and when you turn it on it starts the set up process, however when you sign out of your kobo account it resets the reader back to the sign in process. I doesn't delete any books or tweak, you'd have to do that first, but for all intent and purpose it's back to factory spec.

To set up the reader again you need to log in with an email account. For the purpose of showing Argos why it's faulty I set it up with a completely fictitious email address, which the reader accepted, as it doesn't validate anywhere. You can skip the payment details. I added a free classic book via Calibre.

I got my refund okay, the girl (the same girl who served me yesterday) took it away and came back saying it was faint but she could see the top of the screen being darker. They couldn't do an exchange as they don't have any. Just not sure what to do now as I loved everything else about the device.

Wait for the Voyage - you'll have it in 3 weeks. In the meantime, you have your Paperwhite to read on.

Unfortunately, though, the H2O seems not to be the right device for you. Looking at the photographs you posted, I'd hazard a guess that you had an absolutely normal H2O (it certainly looked the same as mine does). So there's probably no point in getting another one.

I do hope your wrong there Harry. Based on other comments plus the fact that the top of the screen was darker than the bottom it seemed obvious to me mine was not right. None of the pictures I posted showed the colour as I really saw it. I love my Aura so I don't have an issue with the Kobo software. I loved everything about the H20 so there's no way I would have returned it if I could have convinced myself it was normal.

I'm very glad to hear you returned it without problem, hopefully WH Smiths will get them in soon and you will be able to see and check in store for yourself.

The Argos rules re data devices seems very generalised and looks to me like they really don't know much about the devices they sell. Not only Kobo but Apple phones and tablets can also be easily reset to factory spec, so it is probable that many other devices can too. It looks as though it is really just an excuse - or total incompetence/ignorance - on their part to justify making it difficult to return items.

I've seen in another thread that W.H. Smiths will be getting them in on the 15th, so might be worth checking towards the end of the coming week.

The young girl who served me seemed out of her depth tbh, no doubt she consulted the manager when she took it away. She even asked me if i wanted something else instead

I just rang my local store, they still haven't heard anything at all, and she said i'm not the only one asking.

The other thread was me posting that Kobo told me Argos would be getting them on the 15th, obviously they beat that estimate. WHSmith who knows.

I still want one, I want the Voyage too, so I guess its waiting really. WHSmith is my preferred retailer right now as at least they will have demo models which will give the staff a benchmark, plus of course they shouldn't have the same batch of H20's as Argos, but who knows, at this point i'm even contemplating buying one direct off Kobo, but I need to clarify their returns policy first, in the event of another dodgy one.

If you buy online, you'll be covered by the "distance selling" consumer laws, which give you 14 days to return it. You may have to have the return postage unless you can clearly demonstrate that the device is faulty, though.

I was also going to suggest buying online as it would likely be a different batch to the one you got in store. From these forums there seem to be far more good screens than bad ones which is a hopeful sign. Also if the WH Smith manager who promised to let me know when the H2O will be available actually does so, I'll post to let people know.

I also prefer to buy online as you can send back the product eitherto replace it or get a full refund.
I've had some discussions with retailers that a product was fine or an imperfection/deviation from the technical specs was normal or 'within tolerance levels'.
No replacement unit, no refund. Only the offer to call the manufacturers service centre to make an appointment with a qualified technician.
If the technician considers the imperfection/defect 'within tolerance levels' you end up paying for the technical consult. Choosing this option is quite a gamble.
Therefore I prefer to buy online.
