Yes, you can download BOOKS; everyone can. It's personal documents that can't be sent to the K4PC or K4Mac.

@Aceflor: Thank you SO much for posting that info. I have occasionally run into syncing problems with isolated books. It was only a few, so I just ignored it, but thanks to you, I can fix it now

Apparently you are not reading what has been written. You cannot send PERSONAL DOCUMENTS to K4PC/MAC. We are not talking about BOOKS.

Calibre did assign my book an ASIN, but it was not the same one as the ASIN I could find on the amazon.com page for the kindle version of the book. I changed the ASIN, reconverted to mobi, had Calibre email the book, and now whispersync works perfectly well.
Karma to you for that one. That was the only challenge I occasionally faced. I'm hoping that now I can always solve it.

I’m having a problem syncing my reading position. This is what I’ve done.

1. Imported a non-Amazon epub into Calibre.
2. Converted the epub to azw3.
3. Ran quality check plugin and updated the ASIN to match Amazon. Is there a way to view the headers of a azw3? The mobimetaeditor I have won’t open an azw3 file. The list of files are grayed out for anything other than mobi.
4. Sideloaded the azw3 book to my Paperwhite from Calibre.
5. Double clicked on the azw3 on my Mac to load the book into K4PC.
6. On Paperwhite read about 10 pages.
7. On K4PC opened the book again. In menu I chose "Sync to furthest page read" but it won’t sync.

Thoughts/Suggestions?

It's because you're side-loading it. Whispersync can only support Kindle formatted files (azw, prc) that go through Amazon's server.

You need to convert it to mobi (AZW's can't be emailed) and then email it to your device with the word convert in the subject (so it'll be converted to AZW3). It will now be supported by Whispersync.

However, you may still have a problem syncing between the K4PC, because I don't know if you'll be able to get the file into K4PC that way. Documents can't be emailed to K4PC, and I don't know if K4PC can access the archives like the Kindle device can.

I found the converted mobi version of the file does sync.

1. Converted the epub to mobi (old format) in Calibre.
2. Updated ASIN using Quality Check plugin.
3. Side-loaded the mobi version to my Paperwhite.
4. Opened mobi on my mac and opened in K4PC.
5. I was prompted on my Paperwhite to sync to furthest reading location.

Getting back to the azw3 version, I verified my azw3 had the correct headers by changing the extension to azw and opening it in Mobi Meta Editor:

EXTH 113 = B008******
EXTH 501 = EBOK
EXTH 504 = B008******

Apparently, the issue must be with the firmware on PW1 5.4.4. My concern with epub to mobi is the loss of formatting but if I want to sync reading positions I’ll have to live with that.

If anyone has any further comments let me know.

Did not know you could do this. Looking at Quality Check, it seems you are talking about Quality Check ==> Check missing ASIN Identifier. It talks about "required for reading on a Kindle Fire" which is probably why I glossed over it... so it will embed the amazon: identifier as the mobi-asin, very interesting. I guess I can tell nynaevelan no need for Mobi Meta Editor...

Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

No, I did not know that is what it did also. I've used this a time or two but unfortunately when I did, it was after I had already used the editor to add the ASIN back in. I just thought it checked to see if they had an ASIN in the identifiers. Wow, thanks for this tidbit, this will save me some manual work.

There is an additional menu option under Fix ==> Fix ASIN for Kindle Fire.

I had that one turned off but I just checked and i do not have any. Now of course I am going to have to add a book or two so I can test if this will fix my issue without using the editer.

I’ve given up trying to sync 3rd party books between my Paperwhite, Mac, and IOS iPhone specifically to sync reading position.

Here’s what I’ve done so far.

Paperwhite and K4PC Sync:

1. Convert to mobi. NOTE: azw3 does not sync with this method.
2. Update ASIN using Quality Check Plugin (Fix ASIN for Kindle Fire). This sets book to EBOK and sets the ASIN to Kindle’s ASIN.
3. Copied mobi book to Paperwhite.
4. Opened mobi book in K4PC (i.e. side load).

Reading points are synced.

5. Copied the same .mobi to Kindle for IOS using iTunes.

Reading point is not synced on the iPhone.

I consider this a fail since I need the iPhone sync (i.e. could be picking up daughter at dance class…just saying).

Paperwhite and Mobile devices:

1. Convert to mobi.
2. Don’t update ASIN using Quality Plugin. This disables Read sync via whisper sync on my Paperwhite. I found this out with support.
3. Send mobi to whisper sync.
4. Open mobi in K4PC.

This sync’s reading position on Paperwhite, iPhone, iPad but not K4PC. I consider this the most acceptable workaround. To maintain my position in K4PC I just see the current location on my iPhone then go to that position in K4PC.

I’ve spent two full days on this reading and testing throughout the forums here. I even was on with support and they couldn’t figure out why whisper sync wouldn’t sync when I updated the ASIN the mobi file on my Paperwhite.

So if anyone has any thoughts on syncing reading position between Paperwhite, K4PC, and IOS devices I’d love to hear their solution. But for now I have a pretty good workaround for my reading habits. I have provided feedback to Amazon to include personal docs in K4PC.

That really does sound like the best solution, at least for those with the phone app. Phones are usually kept with us, anyway, while we're at the computer, so at least it's convenient. Certainly better than having to memorize our last location. This whole thing wouldn't even be an issue if Amazon would just let the K4PC access our archives the same way our devices do.

I agree and that is what I told Amazon in my feedback as I buy a lot of IT type of books that may not be sold through Amazon.

Are you not able to use Cloud Reader to read such books on your PC?
