Bingo! Yes, that was it. Hadn't gotten that far yet. Interesting, because the Sigil viewer completely ignores that value. Thanks.

I haven't looked very deeply into whether it is affecting a few epubs or a lot of them, because it's a minor annoyance at this point, but thought I'd mention it because someone else noticed a completely blank page at the beginning of every chapter, and I thought it might be related.
Well I see in a post a little further along you solved the issue. I think though that sometimes a large top margin at the beginning of a chapter may be a mimic feature of a regular paper back.

At any rate glad its solved.

When it comes to KOBO firmware I'd rather say that anything designed by KOBO cannot be recommended and comes with a danger to break functionality or change it in way that might be perceived as rather undesirable by many.

On the other hand, some of the available third party stuff actually immensely increases the usability of the device.

Sigil ignores the xpgt file as it is not part of the epub standard. It is used by the reader apps based on Adobe code. I think it is ignore by other readers.

As far as I know, the page-template.xpgt file is (normally) generated by Adobe's InDesign software. ADE and ARM based renderers will use it, most other software disregards it since, as you said, it is not part of the epub standard. My preference is to remove the file when I edit an ebook since it does nothing for a single column ebook that can't be done in the stylesheet. I really don't need margins being set in multiple places nor do I worry about widening the screen on the ereader to the point at which I would want to use two columns.

Regards,
David

Thanks for the tip. I've never run across an .xpgt file before, but I'll be on the lookout from now on. Yet another item to add to my workflow.

If you use calibre, you could use the Modify ePub plugin to remove the xpgt file.

For those who remove xpgt files, do you edit the css to replicate the big top margin at the start of chapters, or do you not bother? I assume the modify epub plugin does not do this automatically?

I don't bother replicating the big top margin on a chapter start. The style I use for my standard chapter numbering takes about 1cm above and below the chapter number which is a wide enough space for me.

Try it yourself or maybe read the support thread for it. Just because I take the time to post links for people to use does NOT mean I have tried each and every solution.

I lkike trying to point people to items to help themselves with.

What is the point of making a suggestion if you can not willing to answer questions about it.

At any rate I did run a few books through it and it cleared up some issues I did not realize I had till I looked at the book again.

regards

Quite possibly because I do not actually use it? You might have seen I for instance post links to Kobo Dictionaries, Fonts, Tweaks, Hacks, have initiated discussions and techniques for changing file systems to ext2 / ext3 from FAT32; all of which are activities I for one do NOT do.

Why you ask do I post useful links?

One of my favorite uses for this plugin is removing odd characters from a book you've added to Calibre. Occasionally when adding a book, it leaves a lot of odd characters, mostly the As with a carat and others. Use the Modify ePub plugin, check the box for "Encode HTML in UTF-8" and all those odd characters are converted to what they should be.

The "Smarten punctuation" function works quite well too.

It's not a plugin you'll use for every book, but it's great clearing up some unwanted effects when needed.
