Oh, dear, a popular computer site The Register picked up the news today. On the bright side, more people now know about Kobo.

user reviews complained of buggy desktop software which rendered the device unusable in some cases. Poor customer service and a lack of available titles also generated online ire.
All (with the exception of available titles) of which we have been complaining about long before the launch in Japan, long before 2.0. It's a great reader, love my KT but the software/firmware aspect needs a major cleaning.

Isn't this to be expected? without the availability of ereaders, authors and publishers really aren't going to pay much attention to ebooks. Now that Kobo have released the Touch in Japan and Amazon is expected to release soon, I would expect authors and publishers to sit up and take notice.

I also think that the availability of ebooks in Japanese is not going to be done through the translation of English books into Japanese but Japanese authors and publishers converting their own work into ebooks. Now that at least one device will properly support the language and script, we should see the selection gro and probably fairly rapidly.

I wonder if this will cause Kobo to finally address some of those feature requests that have been sitting there for years or perhaps attempt to improve their customer service ... Yeah right, I know, I'm dreaming

One of the themes I'm seeing in the reporting is the slavish belief that Kobo's press release on the pulling of the Rakuten reviews is the gospel truth.

Many of the reviews were posted after the 'official' release time.

The biggest reason that I think the Kobo explanation of the review page pulling is a diversion is that the review pages have not been turned back on.

If this was the real reason, Rakuten could have cleared all the existing reviews off the pages, and opened the links again. This would allow people who did receive the correct updates to review the product.

As far as I can tell, Rakuten is still not allowing customers to post reviews of the Kobo Touch. And that implies that they know the problem is not limited to people getting to the servers before the official release time.
