It's a matter of acclimatisation. Friend of mine moved to Melbourne a couple of years ago. The first winter he was there he was walking around in a tee-shirt during the "cold" 10C winter days. The next winter he was shivering along with the rest of the locals. 10C is tee-shirt weather for me. 20 is very warm. 25 is damned hot .

The same thing happened to me the first and second winters I spent in Hawaii. During the first one I didn't understand all the locals running aroung in hoodies b[+c#]ng about how cold it was; the second one, I understood.

In Belgium you generally have to substract 5 C from the termometer, so 18 C feels like 13 C. For me the best temperature is 23 to 26 C, anything above is too hot. I start to melt at 30 C. The first years here I was quite shocked to see people wearing winter jackets and boots in July (no kidding, I saw someone today in a winter coat, and a few years ago a woman in thick coat and high boots when it was 28 C at least) come November they put on their t-shirts and shorts. I just don't get them.

For reading in public no problem on metro or train, or in the park. Noisy cafe or restaurant is a no no.

Anyway, it looks like our yearly week of summer is over. Today totally feels like autumn. Why did I even buy summer dresses...

Yes, I know. I have been in a sub-tropical are for too long. Twenty-five years ago I would wear a Tee shirt when it was cold enough to require de-icing a windscreen before driving. That was in Canberra during winter. In summertime air conditioned buildings here are usually set at twenty-four degrees Celsius, and I find them chilly if I don't have a jacket. We have an air-conditioned house and my wife and I compromise; in the hot days of summer we set it at twenty-nine. (We have a Doona that is twice as thick on my side.)

Not to detract from the nice "at what temperature do you melt" conversation (about 25C for me), but I was wondering how many people read on their readers in the sun. Don't you find that it heats up if you stay in the sun? Not immediately, of course, but if you read for about an hour or so.

On a trip to Egypt in March I spent many hours reading (in the shade) in temperatures in the mid 30s. The Kindle worked just fine.

I have read outdoors in 30 deg and bright sunshine, the Kindle was fine but if anything the screen was almost too white in direct sun light, I had to move around so the sun didn't hit the screen directly. But the device getting hot? No problem.

I stay in the sun . Maybe that's the problem. I ended up preferring paper books for this activity. If there is some shade it's not a problem, but a summer sun shining directly on the reader for a few hours is.

I spent a quite a bit of time in Scotland in the sixties and seventies. I was there in the summer one year; I believe it was on a Thursday.
