Last time? Sometime in the middle of 2009 or maybe 2008. And they didn't have the book. I had to go on Powells to get it.

Booksales? Now that is another story. Our library has a booksale that is the entire basement of the library with a members preview night four times a year. It's like Walmart saying there is 75% off the entire store on Black Friday. But oh the books you can find for a buck! I owe my large cookbook collection to that place.

I go several times a week to see what is newly out.

I commute by train and there is a B&N in the train station.

Multiple answers:

Used bookstores: Still go a lot. Even a bit more recently, since I have started using 1dollarscan and bookscanUS to scan backlist books that aren't (and probably never will be) available in e-book. So, in cases where I can't bear to part with my copy, I'm buying duplicates to send to be scanned.

DTB bookstore to buy a book: Twice in the last year, to buy study workbooks for my son - oh, the joys of having a high-school senior ! It's still a bit hard to do workbooks on an e-reader, IMO, although I'm sure others will disagree. Other than that, it's e-book only.

DTB bookstore to buy other stuff: After several years of barely visiting our local B&N B&M store, I now go fairly often because I like their selection of gifts and games. And, I've visited to look at Nook covers and accessories. So, with me, at least, their strategy of trying to re-invent their B&M stores as gift/bookstores is working. And, I'm signed up for B&N Buzz, which periodically sends me little discount codes for the stores, and combined with my B&N credit card, can make their gifts fairly reasonably priced. I've also used the read-for-free to sample some books on my Nook while indulging at their cafe. I don't know if their shift will be enough to save any of their B&M stores, but it sort of works for me.

Borders about 3 or 4 years ago looking for a The Engine 2 Diet. I wanted it in paper to use in the Kitchen, but I ended up having to order it from Amazon.

Yesterday I went to Booksamillion as I have a gift card - picked up a couple of bargain items, but the balance may well we used towards ebooks.

On Friday, I went to fnac for a book signing with Lisa McMann (by the way, have they figured out how to get authors to sign ebooks yet?)
During that morning I went to several bookstores, looking for any of her books in English (I failed spectacularly).

I do like bookstores, but I feel that book prices here in Spain are high... I'm definitely more likely to buy a paper-edition if I know the book is one that I'm going to want to keep and it's a nice edition (like two recent purchases: The Night Circus -I got the hardcover for less than the price of the Kindle edition- and A Wrinkle in Time, 50th anniversary). As I buy more books in English than in Spanish, I'll most likely order them from Amazon or The Book Depository.

Unfortunately we don't have a book store where I live any more. Last summer I visited three diffrent B&N stores in USA. Loved every second, strolling around the book shelves and also playing with the (then) newly released Nook Simple Touch and buying Nook 1st edition accessories 75% off.

Starting a poll on the matter. I think this thread is better for the discussion of this matter where as a poll is better for the number of years and/or months that we have not been in a book store.

I use to step by any bookstore (when i found one)... ...most of the times just to browse, because books are really expensive here in Chile

Last saturday i was in a mall with my wife and kid, and entered into a bookstore to take a look. I bought a Geronimo Stilton's book to my son, it costs about US$38.50 (hardcover edition). As another example, Joe Hill's Horns has a price of US$28.60... ...So, you know, get a Kindle is a good deal...

Yeah, if you live outside the US and read literature in English it is the sweetest deal possible. Those $0.99 deals doesn't exactly hurt either. I can see that books in English will be expensive in a non-English speaking country, limited market and no returns, and with the advent of the Kindle and Amazon's eco-system the gap is only going to widen.

The last time I went into a NEW bookstore was a B&N to buy a Nook. That was about a year ago. I would have liked to keep coming in to read the "free store limit" once a week, as kind of a coffee-and-cake outing, but they took all the comfy chairs out, so no.

I do still go to USED bookstores frequently, though, as I have been grabbing old backlist books for scanning.

I'm not sure what I would vote in a poll, because of the complications above.

Thank you! I don't go very often to BN, but I could have sworn that there were less chairs there last time I went. I make a point of taking my kids there every so often. I give them some money to find something they want. We go there or the comic book store. I miss my weekly comic trip. Its the only places left around here.

We used to have a good used book store, but the owner decided he wanted to sell coffee, then couldn't figure out why he went out of business. Once he switched to a coffee with a few books thrown, it chased off a those that spent more than a cup of coffee. I would guess he only carried about 10-20% of the books that he used to. The books he put out were the expensive books, not the cheap paperbacks I used to get.

I love going into a bookstore and just wandering through the aisles. I've always been sold on a book by the cover and if the synopsis on the back peaks my interest I'll read a few pages to see if it's worth the buy. I like the smell of print, the feel of holding a book in hand, and dog earing the corner of a page. Though eBooks are convenient, curling up on a rainy day with an eReader holds little competition for curling up with a good ol' fashion book.

The indie bookstores are even more wonderful because you can find collector editions and hard backs of classics and unique novels for a really good price. Though the world spins ever faster towards complete technological dependance, there will always be a few die hards that keep the nostelgia of print in hand.
