I buy MP3s and ebooks from amazon anyway. I don't mind that wall as much as I mind paying to put my existing media in their cloud. |

And what about Sideloading Music and Videos, although there's not alot of space to do that.

I'd buy one of these if I didn't already own 3 iPads. But I am getting the kindle touch to "upgrade" my K3.

There is now a wiki page on the Kindle Fire. It contains stuff from the Amazon site. Please improve it when you know more real data, such as which version of Android they will support.

You're making too much out of it for the average person who'd be interested in the device. You get 5GB of cloud storage at no charge.
If folks need an SD card slot and want "open" this isn't the device for them. Nothing wrong with that. Last edited by SCION; 09-30-2011 at 12:22 PM. |

one of the questions asked was "Can you play media purchased elsewhere on the Fire?" answer" "Sure, I uploaded my entire iTunes library. It's got to be DRM free... I moved it to the cloud and then it's all visible on the device." another question was "Can you load your own files through the USB?" answer "Yes, you can connect it to a PC. We don't think people are going to do it very often; we haven't optimized for that use. But if you plug it into a PC or Mac, folders will show up and you can drag files onto it." |

The Nook Color is the hackable blank slate. The Fire (and maybe the coming Nook tablet) are for those many, many folks who want to the thing to work when it shows up. The Fire is aimed at providing the most popular services for a good price, not to be the best Android tablet. Like the Kindle, Amazon is shooting to provide a carefully chosen set of capabilities at a good price and do them very well. Since this is a tablet, this is a much larger set of capabilities. We'll see how well Amazon chose. As for being locked in, most people are locked in now and don't even think about it. The techies are not the target for the Fire.

FWIW, I just ordered the Kindle Fire. I know it'll probably very difficult to root it and get around its bootloader to install other Android OS, but, it is just $200 and will do 80 to 90% what I do with my 10" Android tablet today.
No doubt there will be bigger tablets with more features coming out next year, but, at $200 for a nice IPS screen, decent performance, and it will do the media content stuff well right now, I'm good to go. If I already bought an iPad, I can see why you wouldn't buy this since the iPad should do everything that the Kindle Fire can do --- unless you want another 7" reader for just $200. Also, it is backed by Amazon and will get a lot of love from Amazon for a while as Amazon pushes it's strategy. I expect more developers will put their apps on the Amazon store because of the Kindle Fire --- provided that Amazon picked a recent enough version of the Android OS to make development economical. |

I'd be shocked if it isn't rooted within 48 hours

Opinions vary on that. It seems Amazon's intention is for all that to go to the cloud. But, I was specifically replying to the assertion that, based on ebook sources, the Fire is more locked down than the Ipad. Other than not having B&N's nook app (for whatever reason) it really isn't. The Fire will read ePubs, PDFs, Kobo and Kindle ebooks, and that covers the vast majority of the market.

If any device could be rooted and have its bootloader figured out, it'll be the Kindle Fire. It should also be very popular which means the hackers will stick with it a lot longer than some of the other devices.
But, if I counted on that happening, I wouldn't buy the Fire today and would wait for the hacks to be done. In order to rationalize pulling the trigger today, I had to convince myself that even if the Kindle Fire isn't ever hacked, it's still worth it. ![]() |
