I frequently read outside but I rarely sit with the sun at my back, rather I sit toward the sun with a hat on so that I wont get blinded by the sun. Also, direct light can produce glare (in the ''wrong'' angle), but I found that if I sit toward the sun I don't have to worry about that problem, at all. Works as well as a paperback book, really.
Sometimes, I also like to read outside at night using a book light, drinking a cup of tea while observing the night sky from time to time. Haha ![]() |

Rarely, I usually read in bed. But when occasionally I do read outside, I read in the shade.

Always. But my TX has lcd, so I'm restricted to paper books on the beach. That's more or less only time when I'm in the sun with nothing else to do than sit and fry. Concerts or walking on the street don't really count (though I sometimes read a paper on the street, especially on the way to the bus stop).
We have lot of cloudy days and august sun is already too weak for tanning, in winter it starts to go dark around 3 - for me lcd is definitely better. |

e-ink probably works the best in direct sunlight. I was amazed by that. It is actually much more glarey in artificial light.

I try to avoid reading in direct sunlight. My iPad has an LCD screen, and it is rather difficult to read In direct sunlight thanks to the glare. But on the bright side though, I can read in the dark without a torchlight!

I would LOVE to read in direct sunlight. E-ink does not hurt by it ... and most of the e-readers state in their brochures that you can do it.
My problem as I always state in this forum is that I had the bad luck and sense of buying a SONY reader... which (I hope they fixed their problems by now!) came with a faulty e-ink screen that "dissolves" the image when exposed to direct lighting ... hence, I cannot read in direct sunlight, because pages "fly away". ahhh screen fade, the K2 had that problem when it first was released. People were returning K2's, getting a new one, having the same problem, and returning them again. There had to be a few really bad shipments of screens at the time.

Not often, but I can't read on my ipad well in even partial sunlight, in fact, even on an overcast day I find it hard to read on outside. Luckily, I have a Kindle for that.

In early spring, late fall, and in winter I like to sit and read in the sun. In the summer the heat and extremely high humidity makes staying in the shade hardly bearable, nobody goes out to soak up the sun then.

As much as I possibly can. Which is probably at least an hour a day in spring/fall and more in summer.
Unfortunately, while it's touted as being useful outdoors, the K3 (or at least mine) suffers when it's too hot (above 80) or cold (below 65 or so). While it doesn't slow down anymore (like in previous firmware versions) it does get kind of grainy when it's hot. And when it's cold, it's so slow to change pages. |

I read at my light rail stop and there are many times where shade isn't an option. Also there are other conditions where there is just high glare that are nearly as harsh as direct sunlight. It's not like I prefer that condition, but I do have that condition all too often.
