Yes switiching your country to USA from Canada is easy enough in the manage your kindle section. I've swtiched it to get the free apps and then switched it back. I did get a notice from them saying that they noticed that I changed country's and to send proof. I haven't and nothing has happened to my account/downloaded apps... Not too sure how mag/newsp/ebook purchases (not free) works...
has anyone tried that?

I read somewhere that amazon do some checks on the location, such as ip address checks. Is that true? If not, I will set up a US address. as the range is far superior.

Price Gouging. Australia is worse affected than Canada. Same in Itunes.

Helix 70: I believe that the Kindle store for "country" Canada pricing is actually in U.S. dollars. At least that's what my credit card statements show each month when I've bought a book.

I have seen no evidence that they do. I post and download and connect from a Canadian IP address, but have a US mailbox address that I use for Kindle (and other stuff, since I'm close enough to the border to have stuff shipped there.) The one annoyance is that I get dinged for Washington state sales tax (less than HST, certainly) because that address is in Washington. But that's less of an annoyance than trying to change it.

The one place you WILL have Kindle and Amazon notice your address is with WhisperNet. If you connect from outside the US, you can't get everything free. Magazine subscriptions, for example, require paying an (outrageously high) weekly fee. And you'll get dinged for stuff you send to your kindle email address for automatic whispernet transfer. But as long as you use WiFi, that isn't an issue.

Hmm. Exactly what sort of purchase involves surcharges? I'm off to the UK shortly with my new Kindle 3G, and I'd been assuming that I could buy books via 3G without any additional cost. Not that I don't have more than enough to read already, of course...

(Note: I'm in Canada.)

Books bought from Amazon are never an issue. You'll be fine. If you bought a book from a third party, and wanted to send it to your Kindle over WhisperNet by sending it in email, that would get a charge. (However, you could always use the @free.kindle.com address and then download it from Amazon on any computer you could connect with, then sideload.)

Thank you, CRussel -- your answer is much appreciated (even if my thanks are tardy)!

Why?
Why people would want active content on their kindle is beyond me. The main reason I bought the Kindle was for the long battery life. I'm in Canada and we have games, just not active content. I prefer my Kindle remains inactive as much as possible and use my droid for anything active. Although I did end up getting hangman as a survival tool for some boring lectures.

You can also get kindle books downloaded to your device from the experimental browser, just look for websites containing links to '.mobi' books. This is really awesome with free 3G access anywhere.

Oh, really? I've never seen them for sale to Canadian customers on either Amazon.ca or Amazon.com. Where (and how) did you get them?

In case no one mentioned this, the US version has a usb adapter that you can plug into the wall. I was wondering why my canadian one didn't come with one but after some digging, I found out it only came with the US one.

Just search amazon for 'canada kindle games' or 'blufi canada' for that hangman one.

really? I'm in Canada and it came with the usb cord and the attachment for plugging it into the wall. I only charge it through the wall outlet cause it's so much faster.
