[GUI Plugin] Kindle Collections (old)

So you are both saying the Kindle and the plugin are showing collections, but the Calibre Device view is not showing any collections for the books (and the books are marked as on device)?

If it was just a few collections, then it could be the ASIN issue. But if its none, then something is going on.

If on the Kindle you manually add a book (that was sent to the device from calibre) to a collection, then connect it to your PC, do you see the collection listed in the Device View against the book?

It could be something in the collections.json format but I'd have to see some examples. I am seeing collections in Calibre, although I haven't verified every one. The calibre code looks like its doing essentially the same thing as my plugin so it should see the same collections. With a test json and some edits to the source I might be able to find the issue.

Your Collection plugin is in my view NOT the issue !
Calibre it self used to, sometime ago, show book-collection relation in the device view in Calibre. Not for some time though.
IF I understood it all, then, pheef, not my baby
IF not, I'll shutup and listen, to see what happens.
BUT your plugin is WAY better for me than any other solutions I've tried so far.
( I DID decide to go for Author based collections ... oh my, SO many pages on K3 in collection view )

My concern is that the plugin has modified the collection file in a way that confuse Calibre.

So if you add a book to a collection manually on the kindle, then connect and go to Device View - do you see that collection?


Oh, on the import to custom column - based on some simple tests and borrowed code from kiwidude, it looks like its fairly easy to do. Could be a bit dangerous as it will replace everything in the custom column.

Just to add to this conversation, the only collection which shows up in the collections column in the device view on my k2, is the collection which I created on the kindle. I used to be able to see them also, but I do not know when they stopped showing up as I rarely look at that info but I do remember it was never 100%.

Pretty much ditto - collections in device view always showed up for sony but hardly ever for kindle and definitely not since using ANY collection manager program. Some of my "kindle-created not used with calibre" collections show but not even all of them.

In some previous forum thread there was a post about calibre not being able to read kindle collections well, so I've not been too bothered by the lack of collection titles in device view.

Maybe you can PM me your Kindle's system/collections.json file and let me know which collection was created on the Kindle to see if I can see what the difference is. The metadata.calibre file might be useful as well to see the paths, or at least a few of the entries.

Finally had time to test this. I added a book to an existing, Calibre-managed collection manually on the Kindle and connected - but the Collection column on Device View is still empty for that book (shows up correctly with plug-in using Edit Collections on Kindle). Then I tried creating an entirely new collection on the Kindle and adding some books to it (on the Kindle); again, nothing showing up on Device view.

I do recall quite clearly that there was a time that my Device View showed all my collections correctly. I used to copy over the values manually from Device View to my custom "collections" column in my Calibre library view, and then I'd unplug the Kindle and check against the Kindle itself. The Device View showed all the collections correctly. As I said, I don't know exactly when (much less why) this changed, but it was certainly after I started using the plug-in - I remember checking the Device View right after installing the plug-in, and the collections were still there. Of course this doesn't establish causation - just a fact.

Lots of big warnings maybe? I think Goodreads Sync has this feature now; as long as you warn adequately, to my mind that's enough. Though I suppose you could possibly save the old values to allow a restore in the event of an error (well, assuming that's possible!).

(In case it matters, I use a K3.)

Sure. Inc Customization, just select Create for Tags and in the Include column put the tag name and it will only include that name from the list of Tags.

A little help needed please:

I build most of my collections from Author_sort, but there are a few instances where I do not want to use this, for example short stories are in their own collection.

If I set the plugin to create from both the tag and from Author_sort, I get books in multiple collections. I tried simply plugging in the author name for the tag, but since I use last name, first name for my author each one is read as two tags.

Is there a way to either:

1) Have the plugin create a collection based on the tag if it exists, and Author_sort if there is no tag, or

2) Have the plugin read the whole tag field as a single tag, even if it contains a comma, or

3) Create a custom column in Calibre that will insert the tag if it exists, or the Author_sort if no tag exists?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Oh! I didn't realize it was so simple. I thought that once I chose to create collections from tags it would automatically choose *all* of them.

I am seeing the collections in random places in the home page - can i make it so i only view the collections, not the books?
