No italics for generic sans-serif font family (fallback font)
Product: Kobo Glo (applicable to all other models)
Firmware: 3.3.0 Plugins: n/a File types: epub Sideloaded or from Kobobooks: n/a On external SD: n/a Steps to reproduce:
The problematic fonts for firmware 3.3.0 seems to be Avenir Next (fallback font for sans-serif font), Gothic: no italics, no bold, no bold and italics (only regular), Ryumin: no italics, no bold, no bold and italics (only regular). Affects only regular epub files. Kepubs are not affected with this bug. Workaround: No. This affects the predefined generic font families definitions/rules. Sure, user can embed fonts in an epub. But this is not possible for purchased books as these are protected by DRM. Other observations (no bugs):

Can you tell what font is being used for the fallback san-serif font? I thought it might have been Gothic. There is a bug in recent firmware that Gothic doesn't show italics or bold inepubs. But, your test case doesn't show italics, but it does show bold. And it shows bold italics.
My test was using 3.4.1 on a Glo. |

Update, Glo fw 3.3.0:
Regular epub: Avenir Next: no italics (this is the sans-serif fallback font) Gothic: no italics, no bold, no bold and italics (only regular) Ryumin: no italics, no bold, no bold and italics (only regular) Kobo epub (kepub): font family font styles are correctly displayed for preinstalled (embedded) fonts. I started to read a Spanish book today, for the first time since November last, and was extremely surprised that when selecting a word, the dictionary called was the French, and I had to change it from the pop-up window to get the Spanish definition. At first, I thought it was a problem with the metadata or the epub, but the metadata was correct. I then tried other, already read, Spanish books and there was the same problem. This on the Aura HD and the Aura 6". I have no problems with French, English, German nor Italian.
Is there a known problem emerging between the version last November and my present 3.3.0? I've done a quick search through this thread, but didn't see anything. Does anybody have an idea around the problem? |

Furhermore when turning on the Glo, main language was English instead of Italian... !?! I tried to update sw with Kobo desktop and now I'm on 3.3.0 firmware, But the light is not back. Now, do you think I have to go for a hard reset to have it working again (and I really need the light, because I mainly use the Glo during dark hours...)? That would be really annoying, since I have almost 800 ebooks loaded and I'd like to avoid a reload... |

You may have to change some settings back from default, since that method will (by design) destroy your config file, but there are worse problems to have. Namely, the lack of a light... |

3.5.0 Update on "No italics for generic sans-serif font family (fallback font)"
Firmware 3.5.0 Update on "No italics for generic sans-serif font family (fallback font)". See this post.
The known font issues are still the same for regular epubs. For kepubs however: this is now totally messed up. Everything is now displayed in the font that is selected by the user. Applies to both system fonts as user installed fonts. (Generic) font-family are not respected at all. Only when the font is set to "Default" there is a distinction between font families: serifs are displayed as serif and sans-serif as sans-serif. It only getting worse and worse. |
