  1. Leave brightness on 1%.
  2. Press light button to turn off the light.
  3. Press light button again. The brightness doesn't turn on.
Current result: I can't turn on the brightness using the light button if it's left on 1%. I have to use the slider to turn up the light, and then slide back down to 1% to have it working.
Workaround: Leave lightness on something above 1% when turning off light.
About this: I tried two or three factory resets and power cycles, and the light finally works again. Don't know what caused it, but I know for a fact that I'm not alone in having had this problem. I'm just happy that I can leave the light at 1% (it really annoyed me).

No italics for generic sans-serif font family (fallback font)

Product: Kobo Glo (applicable to all other models)
Firmware: 3.3.0
Plugins: n/a
File types: epub
Sideloaded or from Kobobooks: n/a
On external SD: n/a
Steps to reproduce:
  1. use the attached files
Current result: No italics for sans-serif fonts when user agent has to use the default (embedded) fallback sans serif font family.
The problematic fonts for firmware 3.3.0 seems to be Avenir Next (fallback font for sans-serif font), Gothic: no italics, no bold, no bold and italics (only regular), Ryumin: no italics, no bold, no bold and italics (only regular).
Affects only regular epub files. Kepubs are not affected with this bug.
Workaround: No. This affects the predefined generic font families definitions/rules.
Sure, user can embed fonts in an epub. But this is not possible for purchased books as these are protected by DRM.

Other observations (no bugs):
  • No real monospace font predefined (e.g. Courier)
  • OpenDyslexic font is considered a "monospace font". Why? Probably poor implemention by Kobo (they chose the "easy" way). Instead of adding a new (not used) generic "cursive" font family.
Attached Files
File Type: zip GenericFontFamilyFallbackTest.zip (6.8 KB, 266 views)

Can you tell what font is being used for the fallback san-serif font? I thought it might have been Gothic. There is a bug in recent firmware that Gothic doesn't show italics or bold inepubs. But, your test case doesn't show italics, but it does show bold. And it shows bold italics.

My test was using 3.4.1 on a Glo.

On my Glo firmware 3.3.0 it's the Avenir Next font that shows no italics.

Wow, I hadn't noticed that before. No italics, but it does have bold italics. And it looks like it could be the fallback font.

One note is that Ryumin and Gothic are Opentype fonts.

Question problem calling Spanish dictionary

I started to read a Spanish book today, for the first time since November last, and was extremely surprised that when selecting a word, the dictionary called was the French, and I had to change it from the pop-up window to get the Spanish definition. At first, I thought it was a problem with the metadata or the epub, but the metadata was correct. I then tried other, already read, Spanish books and there was the same problem. This on the Aura HD and the Aura 6". I have no problems with French, English, German nor Italian.
Is there a known problem emerging between the version last November and my present 3.3.0? I've done a quick search through this thread, but didn't see anything.
Does anybody have an idea around the problem?

Just yesterday evening, I turned on my Glo (it was 3.1.1 sw, no patches) and I had the light bug. Whatever I did, no light (I used to read with 20% and I never changed).
Furhermore when turning on the Glo, main language was English instead of Italian... !?!
I tried to update sw with Kobo desktop and now I'm on 3.3.0 firmware, But the light is not back.
Now, do you think I have to go for a hard reset to have it working again (and I really need the light, because I mainly use the Glo during dark hours...)? That would be really annoying, since I have almost 800 ebooks loaded and I'd like to avoid a reload...

If they're sideloaded, saving them across a hard reset should be fairly simple. Copy the database, the books, and the image folder over to your PC, and copy the whole file system over into a different folder...you know, just in case. (In fact, if you have the tools, you may want to do a full card-image backup while you're at it - again, just in case. Better to have and not need, eh wot?) From there, you should be able to hard-reset, install 3.3.0, copy the books, database, and images back over, and go on about your day. The database won't know anything's changed, but you'll have refreshed the firmware and assorted settings.

You may have to change some settings back from default, since that method will (by design) destroy your config file, but there are worse problems to have. Namely, the lack of a light...

Title: œ is not a letter
Product: Aura
Firmware: 3.5.0
File types: epub
Sideloaded or from Kobobooks: Sideloaded
On external SD: No
Steps to reproduce:
  1. Open a book in French, or at least with some words containing the œ character
  2. Try to select a word containg œ: long-press the word
Current result: The selection stops at the œ, as if it were a space or some other non-word character.
Workaround: None that I know, you just have to move the selection handles after the initial selection.

Sideloaded or from Kobobooks: Sideloaded

Steps to reproduce:
  1. Open a book containing some element with a size expressed in cm (in the CSS). For example: the one here
  2. Change the font size
Current result: The size of the element changes, meaning that the "cm" unit is being interpreted as some multiple of the font size, instead of remaining an absolute size, as it should be.
Workaround: None that I know.

3.5.0 Update on "No italics for generic sans-serif font family (fallback font)"

Firmware 3.5.0 Update on "No italics for generic sans-serif font family (fallback font)". See this post.

The known font issues are still the same for regular epubs.
For kepubs however: this is now totally messed up.

Everything is now displayed in the font that is selected by the user. Applies to both system fonts as user installed fonts. (Generic) font-family are not respected at all.

Only when the font is set to "Default" there is a distinction between font families: serifs are displayed as serif and sans-serif as sans-serif.

It only getting worse and worse.
